This Human Rights Day, Commonwealth of Learning highlights how access to inclusive, equitable education supports the realisation of human rights and accelerates progress towards sustainable development.
In a new blog post, COL Adviser: Gender, Dr Karen Nyangara, reflects on a participatory workshop at that brought together educators and civil society to explore community-based learning models that empower youth — especially girls, women, persons with disabilities, and other marginalised learners.
Drawing on case studies from Samoa and Tanzania, Dr Nyangara demonstrates how culturally grounded, flexible learning approaches can build confidence, strengthen skills, and support young learners to be at the centre of scalable, sustainable social change.

Women Empowerment and Gender Equality Course: January 2025.

The Commonwealth of Learning’s (COL) fifth and final offering of the Gender Equality and Women Empowerment (GEWE) Course is now open for registration and commences 20 January 2025. The course is designed to meet the increasing need for competencies of government officials, policymakers, organisational staff and individuals to effect personal and collective transformation in promoting gender equality.

Over eight weeks, participants will learn to use various frameworks and tools to integrate a human rights perspective into the workplace and the community. The course will examine best practices in programming for gender equality and empowerment against a backdrop of the humanitarian issues of our times and the push to meet SDG 5 on gender equality by 2030.

Each week, a one-hour webinar will be held to enable participants to discuss pertinent topics in each module and allow diverse voices to share their experiences. The course materials are accessible to participants using assistive technologies and those who need translation of materials into different languages.

This updated course offering contains integrated feedback from previous cohorts and includes thought-provoking case studies and links to online materials, as well as more user-friendly content. For each module completed, the participant earns a badge, allowing them to receive recognition for as few or as many modules as they wish.
