Progressive Housing Society Progressive Housing Society is a Burnaby organization that provides support services to community members struggling with mental health and homelessness.

Progressive Housing Society is a non-profit organization. Our Homeless Outreach helps Burnaby residents by:

-Engage with unsheltered individuals dealing with homelessness and provide support services to help stabilize lives.

-Connect with individuals with no income, including making and going with individuals to appointments to seek income.

-Assist individuals to locate a rental unit, apply to social housing, and set up new home with furniture.

-Provide follow-up support that ensures individuals have effectively transitioned to housing and are receiving appropriate health and social service programs and services.

-Provide support services to improve skills, personal health and hygiene, household management, financial management, crisis intervention and problem solving and provide follow-up related to these areas.

-Liaise with and refer to community agencies, groups, organizations and businesses


The Mental Health Team's support programs provide support services to individuals with a severe and persistent mental illness by assisting them to develop and maintain the skills needed to live independently in the community. Staff provide support areas in the following areas:

-self-care
-personal safety
-health and wellness
-time management
-communication skills
-illness management
-financial management
-nutrition
-leisure and relationships
-vocational interests
-educational goals
-advocacy around housing issues

There is generally no time limit on how long participants may receive support. As long as participants follow their Mental Health Plan and continue to work on goals, support is provided.

Every night, our Douglas Shelter offers 40 beds, hot meals, and a safe place to land in Burnaby.

Over the past operational year, that added up to 15,767 stays for 116 people, with the shelter running at 99.45% occupancy almost every night of the year.

Behind those numbers is something bigger: 16 guests moved into permanent housing this year, supported by the same team that showed up for meals, health checks, and everyday needs. A safe place to rest is where stability starts. Proud to keep showing up for our Burnaby community.

Everyone deserves a home that feels like theirs. Our Supported Independent Living (SIL) program helps people living with mental health challenges rent their own apartment, or a room in a shared home, anywhere in Burnaby.

Clients get a rental subsidy alongside support tailored to their goals. Some connect with their support worker weekly, others once a month, whatever fits their recovery plan.
Right now, about 100 people are building independence through SIL. That means budgeting, connecting with community, and working toward the life they want, all while having a safe place to call home.

This year, our Burnaby Winter Shelter provided 7,307 overnight stays to 118 individuals, offering more than just a warm bed. Guests connected with health care, detox and treatment support, and got help with everyday needs like getting their taxes done.

Ten shelter guests moved into permanent housing this year. Others took steps toward recovery, stability, and reconnecting with the resources they need to thrive.

At Progressive Housing Society, that means offering choice instead of directives, building safety into every space, and showing up consistently so trust can grow over time.

Since opening in April 2025, the Richmond Drop-In Centre has become a steady, welcoming space for people in the community.

In its first year: 142 unique guests, 3,087 breakfasts, 4,165 lunches, 798 showers, and 385 laundry services.

Beyond the basics, our team helped three guests secure permanent housing and connected more than a dozen more to other housing programs to help them find stable housing.

Add in foot care clinics, bicycle repairs, haircuts, and a weekly Bingo night, and the Centre has become somewhere people come back to, not just pass through.

A strong first year, with more ahead.
