In 1990, the United Nations General Assembly established October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons, to recognize and celebrate the contributions of older persons in our workplaces, communities and globally.

It is also a day to acknowledge and highlight that, for this growing population, many older persons struggle to make ends meet and fully participate in society, particularly if they belong to other equity-seeking groups.

This day reminds us of the importance of working towards equitable and inclusive communities, where everyone can live and age in dignity.

On September 30 — National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day — we honour and remember the survivors of residential schools, and those who never returned home.

Acknowledging this dark legacy of Canada's history is an important part of the reconciliation process, and HEU is committed to carrying this work forward within our union.

Many of our public sector contracts now include provisions that confront anti-Indigenous racism in health care, as well as concrete steps to recognize Indigenous cultural practices, ceremonies, and family relationships through expanded leave provisions. We can be proud of these achievements, but we must also acknowledge that our work to address the damaging impact of colonialism within health care and in our union is an on-going commitment.

Recent reports that white nationalists have appeared on Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc lands are upsetting and disturbing. This is yet another attempt by hate groups to intimidate communities and families affected by residential schools in B.C. into silence.

The history of residential schools isn't up for debate. Residential school denialism has no place in British Columbia. The path to Indigenous reconciliation includes understanding, listening and education, not ignorance and fear.
