­Tomorrow, September 30, is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, when we honour the survivors of residential schools, the children who never returned home, their families, and communities.

As we reflect and remember, we also continue our shared commitment to learning, unlearning, and doing better in all of our work.

Our programs are located on the unceded traditional territories of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the Tsleil-waututh, Squamish, Stó:lō, Qayqayt, and Musqueam Nations. Throughout the year, Cameray is committed to Truth and Reconciliation with these nations.

Over the past year, we have worked with Coast Salish artist Simone Diamond to add this welcoming artwork to our Rosser Avenue location, helping us to recognize the beautiful lands that surround us in Burnaby.

Last week, as part of Truth and Reconciliation Week, some of our team have attended lunch-and-learn sessions by The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, covering topics related to Indigenous histories, experiences, reconciliation, and the ongoing impacts of colonialism in Canada.

Talking about residential schools and educating children on the meaning of today in an age-appropriate way can be challenging. Our Parenting Support Counsellor, Renée has compiled a list of books which are a great starting point:

Our October EYPSP and PEP groups are now open for registration. Please note that we are trialing a new registration system. Please read the instructions below:

You will find all available groups on the online calendar, including drop-in groups and groups that require registration: https://www.cameray.ca/calendar/2026-10/

For groups that require registration, you now need to register on the individual event pages on our website. You will need to register for each group separately.

How to register step-by-step
1. Click the link above for the group you would like to attend.
2. Check the group details, including age requirements*
3. Click 'GOING', the orange button under 'RSVP Here'
4. Enter your name, email address, select whether you live in Burnaby or New Westminster**, add your phone number, date of birth, and select how many childminding spaces you need.
5. Let us know if you have registered for a Cameray group before. If no, or you are unsure, please answer the remaining questions. If yes, you may leave them blank.
6. You will receive an email confirmation of your registration for each group.

Waitlists:
1. Once a group is full, it will display 'Currently full' and 'Get notified when you can RSVP'. Click 'NOTIFY ME' to add your name to the waitlist.
2. If a space becomes available, you will receive an email notification. You will then need to visit the page and register. Please note that everyone on the waitlist will be able to register for the space on a first-come, first-served basis.
3. If you have registered for a group and can no longer attend, please email [email protected] as soon as possible so that we can offer your spot to another family. Thank you for your cooperation.

Please be sure to add the group to your personal calendar, as we no longer send automatic reminders the day before your group.

Drop-in groups:
Our usual drop-in sessions include the Hlúlú Family Drop-ins on Mondays, our Rosser Infant/Child drop-ins on Thursdays, and the University Highlands drop-in on October 15. The Parent Education Program has One-to-one consultations at the New West Wellness Centre. Drop-in groups do not require registration.

October 13 is a Statutory Holiday and there will be no groups on these days. Happy Thanksgiving! 🍂

Welcome to Burnaby!

It was a pleasure to be part of the Welcome to Burnaby Fair, a community celebration bringing together newcomers, residents, service providers, and cultural organizations from across Burnaby.

At Cameray Child and Family Services, we believe strong communities are built through connection, support, and belonging. As a non-profit organization providing counselling, education, outreach, and advocacy for children, youth, and families, events like this give us an opportunity to connect with community members and share resources that help families thrive.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello. We loved being part of a day filled with learning, culture, and community connection. ❤️

Help Keep Our Little Free Library Full! 📚

Take a book > Read a book > Return a book OR share another book.

This Little Free Library is housed at Cameray's 2038 Rosser location but it belongs to the whole neighbourhood. Take a book to enjoy; bring one back for other families to enjoy.

Join us for an interactive workshop for parents and tweens (ages 8-13) to prepare for a safe and confident start to the school year.

As children enter new environments and routines, it's important for them to know how to respond in unexpected situations. Through engaging activities and discussions, families will learn practical emergency preparedness skills, including identifying trusted adults, understanding communication plans, and making safe decisions when away from home.

Parents will gain strategies to support their tweens' growing independence while helping them build the knowledge and confidence needed to stay safe in school and community settings.

Charitable Choices: Tanya Valois of Cameray

Tanya Valois is the Executive Director of Cameray, a non-profit organization that has spent more than 50 years supporting children, youth, and families across Burnaby and New Westminster through counselling, education, outreach, and advocacy. Since joining in 2024, Tanya has guided the organization through a period of growing demand, helping young people and caregivers navigate everything from mental health challenges and trauma to the everyday complexities of raising a family.

Registered groups include a Transition to Child care program, The Play Environment Blueprint: Mindful Tools for Decoding Early Social Dynamics and Conflict, and a fun fall workshop Exploring the Wonder of Apples! Plus many more workshops on the calendar.

The Parent Education Program has One-to-one consultations at the New West Wellness Centre as well another workshop for Tweens and Parents.

Both September 7, and September 30 are Statutory Holidays and there will be no groups on these days.

Our August calendar is now live. This month we have more sessions at Burnaby Parks including drop-ins at Maywood Park, Taylor Park and Graham Park.

There are no Hlúlú Family Drop-ins in August but our Thursday Rosser Infant/Child drop-ins run as normal and the University Highlands drop-in has moved to Richard Bolton Park for the Summer.

The Parent Education Program is back, with One-to-one consultations at the New West Wellness Centre as well a workshop for Tweens and Parents, and a session to prepare for Back-to-school success, both at our Rosser location.

The Circle of Security Parenting Program is an 8 week, attachment-based approach that helps caregivers better understand and respond to their children’s emotional and attachment needs.
