Volunteer Grandparents

Volunteer Grandparents Our mission is to bridge and enrich the generations by fostering understanding, communication and cooperation between the generations.

Programs that we provide in the Lower Mainland and parts of the Fraser Valley:

Family Match Program:
The Family Match Program matches volunteers with families who have children between the ages of 3 to 14, and who do not have accessible grandparents. The program is designed to meet the social and emotional needs of older adults and families. The emphasis is on the creation of long-term extended f

amily relationships. The program has been providing seniors with the opportunity to be an important member of a family, enabling them to share time, love, skills, and life experiences; while offering families the support, love and wisdom of caring seniors. School Grandparent Program:
The School Grandparent Program provides volunteers for educational assignments in elementary schools throughout the Lower Mainland. The SGP began as a pilot project, in 1996, in response to a lack of opportunities for young and old to relate in an increasingly age-segregated society. The pilot project was a resounding success. Beyond fostering intergenerational communication and cooperation, the program demonstrated significant benefit to educators and school children. The volunteers enjoyed the chance to share skills, knowledge, and experience, while providing a valuable community service. Volunteer Grandparents works in partnership with educators to develop, place, and support volunteers in the School Grandparent Program.

Stereotypes frequently pull younger and older generations apart, creating artificial social divides in our schools, workplaces, and local communities. By intentionally bringing young girls and older women together, we can dismantle these age-based biases, share vital life lessons, and build mutual empathy for social change.

The Fact: The World Health Organization (WHO) explicitly identifies intergenerational interventions as one of the three most effective, evidence-based strategies to reduce ageism and improve mutual social cohesion across communities.

Build connection. Share this post to support programs that bring youth and older adults together to share their strengths.

Human rights thrive when generations connect. When girls and older women share their stories, they build a powerful bridge of advocacy that spans decades. These intergenerational bonds challenge the stereotypes that seek to diminish women at both ends of the age spectrum. By fostering mentorship and shared activism, we ensure that the fight for dignity and non-discrimination remains a continuous, lived experience for all women in Canada. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ‘ต๐Ÿ‘ง
