The SFU HOPE Initiative club is a branch of the non-profit and charity organization, The HOPE Initiative. The HOPE Initiative focuses on three pillars: 1) student empowerment, 2) outreach within schools and 3) marginalized community groups. The first pillar of HOPE gives members within a committee the opportunity to take leadership of a project. Projects can vary from mentorship programs to workin
g with various marginalized groups, we are flexible in that you can change positions over semesters to participate in projects that interest you! The second pillar of HOPE is outreach within schools. We hope to grow our club to offer programs to help high school students as they transition to higher education. This semester, we are establishing our HOPE 4 SUCCESS program, a mentorship program to help high school students as they transition to studying at SFU. High school students are paired with an SFU mentor to receive advice and support for post- secondary education, whether it is about living in residence or how to make a functional class schedule, HOPE 4 SUCCESS aims to make the transition to post secondary less stressful! Our third pillar focuses on populations experiencing hardships such as poverty and homelessness. We will be running projects and events that directly support marginalized groups through donations such as, care packages, connecting with individuals in these populations to provide social and emotional support and also indirectly through spreading awareness and advocating for better government policies through social media tools and on/virtual campus events. Following these three pillars, members have the flexibility to take leadership on any projects that interest them while creating new connections, meeting new individuals, and taking initiative. This is a great opportunity to meet like-minded individuals who are interested in humanitarian work. If you have an outreach idea that you want to start, then this club is for you!
