Burlington Historical The Burlington (Ontario) Historical Society, preserving Burlington's history for today and tomorrow

06/02/2026

June marks the start of National Indigenous History Month. The month provides an opportunity to recognize, celebrate, and deepen our understanding of the rich history, heritage, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis.

It is also a time to reflect and acknowledge the ongoing work towards reconciliation. Participate in meaningful opportunities around the city to listen, learn and engage.

Talk about a photo you don't see every day. This photo from our The Globe and Mail collection shows workers putting the finishing touches on the iconic CN Tower in 1975. This last addition made it the tallest free-standing structure in the world at the time!

From the book Images of Burlington –

At the time this photo was taken in the early 1950s it was known as Spencer Park. Burlington’s waterfront looked much different then!

Looking to the west, the Brant Inn is off in the distance. The area behind the seawall was once used as an anchorage for small boats and in the summer it was a popular place for Burlington swimmers.

The area was eventually filled in to create a vibrant waterfront park with the name being changed to Spencer Smith Park.
