IAMCompelled

IAMCompelled We use theatre and media to compel your students towards responsible citizenship!

In 2010, The Canadian Council on Learning stated Canada had the worst record for teaching national history. In addition, The Globe and Mail released an article saying more than 50% of the world's population would forsake their native homelands to live in Canada. Digging deeper, education experts argue every citizen needs to know their history because one can build for a stronger future. On this fo

undation, IAC began to develop a 45 minute presentation on Canadian heritage, heroes and responsible citizenship for students in K-3, 4-8 and 9-10. Not only does our show effectively engage students through the use of theatre and media, it connects with the social studies and history curriculum! Our presentation incorporates a teacher and two students, who take a class trip to the national museum of history in Ottawa, Ontario. The students are challenged to look at the past, live in the present and think about our future. Students are compelled, challenged and provoked to think of ways they can (RIGHT NOW) be a responsible citizen in their schools, community and nation.

📍Louis Riel and the North-West Resistance

Louis Riel was a powerful voice for the Métis people. In 1885, he returned to lead them once again—this time in the North-West Resistance. The Métis, along with some First Nations allies, were fighting to protect their land, rights, and way of life as settlers and the government moved west.

The resistance took place in what is now Alberta and Saskatchewan. It ended in defeat. Riel was arrested, put on trial, and executed. His death shocked the country and remains one of the most debated events in Canadian history.

Louis Riel is remembered as a hero by many—a symbol of resistance, identity, and the ongoing struggle for justice.

🎥 We mention his efforts briefly in our mini-documentary.

📍 Smoking Hill Monument, Frog Lake First Nation

This scared site commemorates the 1885 Frog Lake Massacre, a pivotal event during the North-West Resistance.

On April 2, 1885, a group of Cree warriors led by War Chief Wandering Spirit attacked the settlement near Frog Lake, resulting in the deaths of nine settlers.

This act was driven by desperation due to severe food shortages and unfulfilled treaty promises.

The monument serves as a place of remembrance for the lives lost and acknowledges the complex history of Indigenous resistance.

📍 Cree Warriors – Defenders of Their People

In the shadow of the 1885 North-West Resistance, eight Cree warriors were publicly hanged at Fort Battleford—the largest mass ex*****on in Canadian history since Confederation.

They were leaders and defenders, standing up in a time of fear, hunger, and broken promises. The loss of the bison, forced displacement, and government neglect pushed many Indigenous communities to the edge. In the chaos that followed the Frog Lake Massacre, these eight men were blamed and punished by a system that rarely gave them voice or a fair trial.

📍 Frog Lake National Historic Site

In the film, the community of Frog Lake explains that this monument marks the resting place of those who died during a tragic event. However, the late Elder Connie Saliwonczyk shared, "When people come here, this is all they get to see—they don’t get to hear our stories, of what really happened."
