"A lady with a lamp shall stand
In the great history of the land,
A noble type of good,
Heroic womanhood."
-- (Excerpt), 'Santa Filomena' by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow — 1857

Yes, we all know (or should at least) about Florence Nightingale (the mother of modern nursing) and that her birthday (May 12th) is the influence for International Nurses Day. One lesser known fact is that her influence also stretches to a notorious symbol in the nursing world.

Sure, the red cross is recognized, as are various staffs with serpents (the Staff of Asclepius, and the Caduceus), but Florence, the “lady with the lamp,” is the source as a nursing symbol. This symbol would be the 'Lamp of Learning (Knowledge)'. Florence was put in charge of nursing British and allied soldiers in Turkey during the Crimean War. Spending many hours in the wards, roaming during her night rounds with an oil lamp, giving personal care to the wounded, established her image as the “Lady with the Lamp.”

The image of 'the Lady with the Lamp' captured the public's imagination, especially after Henry Wadsworth Longfellow immortalized her in his poem 'Santa Filomena'.

Every day, nurses show compassion in moments of fear, strength in moments of uncertainty, and kindness when it is needed most. They care for people at their most vulnerable, often putting the needs of others before their own, and that kind of dedication does not go unnoticed.

As members of our union, you do more than provide exceptional care — you stand together to protect one another, advocate for safer workplaces, and fight for the dignity and respect that every worker deserves. Your solidarity makes our union stronger, and your voices continue to make a lasting difference for both your colleagues and the patients you serve.

We are proud to stand beside each and every one of you. Thank you for your courage, your resilience, your compassion, and the countless sacrifices you make every day. Your work changes lives, and your commitment inspires us all.

artist Jaime Black created the REDress Project in 2010 as an aesthetic response to the critical national issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirited People (MMIWG2S+). Held every May 5th, Red Dress Day is a National Day of remembrance and activism honouring the lives of these stolen sisters.

Jamie Black: " I imagine red dresses. Red dresses along city streets and in parks and trees, where every day the public passes by. Red dresses confronting people on their way to work, to school, to dinner. Red dresses as a stark reminder of all those we've lost. Red dresses to remember...".

Recognized on the first day of May every year, International Workers’ Day, or May Day, is celebrated worldwide to recognize and appreciate the hard work and contribution of employees. It is also a way to remind everyone about the rights of the workers and fair treatment in the workplace. Rallies, demonstrations and events around the world use May Day to raise awareness about the important issues they face in the workplace, demand fair wages and present ideas to improve the lives of workers.

Even today, years after the historic struggle of workers in 1886, there is still inequality among workers across various industries and countries. That's why May Day is an important day for workers to raise their voices and demand better working conditions and fair wages. It is a way for them to remind everyone that they deserve to be treated with respect and dignity in the workplace.

In 1984, the Canadian Labour Congress established April 28th as the National Day of Mourning in Canada to remember and honour those who have died, been injured or suffered illness in the workplace.

The date was chosen in 1984, when the Canadian Labour Congress proclaimed the Day to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the day the first Ontario Worker's Compensation Act was approved by the government (1914). The Day of Mourning was enshrined in national legislation by an Act of Parliament on February 1, 1991.

The Day of Mourning, also known as Workers' Memorial Day, is officially recognized in about 100 countries worldwide.

Please check out this article from the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) that showcases how collective action can help move the needle closer to safety and accountability in the workplace:

Congratulations to the LIUNA Local 3000 members at Providence Manor who almost unanimously (by one!) ratified their latest collective agreement! The turnout was great and the end result was even greater.

The Bargaining Committee along with their Rep had shown great resiliency and patience while in pursuit of a great CA that provided significant wage adjustments and increases; increases to shift premiums; increases to health and mental health benefits (an undervalued benefit to have, imho).

Big shout out to the Bargaining Committee, their LIUNA Local 3000 Business Representative and the rest of the members for not just standing strong but standing strong together!

"The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights." - Gloria Steinem

International Women's Day is powered by the collective efforts of all. Collective action and shared ownership for driving gender parity is what makes International Women's Day impactful.

The IWD 2026 'Give To Gain' Campaign encourages a mindset of generosity, collaboration and emphasizes the power of reciprocity and support. When people, organizations, and communities give generously, opportunities and support for women increase.

When women thrive, we all rise.
