Working for Orphans & Widows

Working for Orphans & Widows Working for Orphans & Widows (WOW) is the new, exciting name of the Visionledd ministry. We equip African churches to care for orphans and widows.

WOW imparts a radical, biblical message of righteousness and justice (right relationship with God, right relationship with people), to thousands of African pastors and church leaders every year through conferences and training. From here, local champions who have caught this vision begin to emerge. Through training, they learn to use existing resources (usually "manpower") to care for the vulnerab

le in their communities. Once a commitment to serve orphans and widows has been demonstrated, we come alongside to offer additional resources to enhance and expand the impact of their work. The remarkable thing is, in the process of lifting up the weakest, the orphan and the widow, entire communities are lifted from the bonds of poverty and transformed for life.

Before WOW – Working for Orphans & Widows became what it is today, Jim Cantelon wrote a powerful book called When God Stood Up: A Christian Response to AIDS in Africa.

Through personal stories and firsthand experiences, the book addresses the HIV/AIDS crisis in Africa and the incredible role local churches play in caring for orphans, widows, and vulnerable families.

When God Stood Up is a call to compassion, reminding readers that faith is meant to move us to action. Though now out of print, the values that continue to shape WOW - Working for Orphans & Widow’s ministry today first appeared in those pages, values like hope, dignity, community care, and standing alongside those in greatest need.

Have you ever read When God Stood Up?

Rob's Farm began shelling (or threshing) soybeans and the yield looks promising! Each harvest helps support vulnerable families in Zambia. A farm that started as a seed of faith continues to grow into lasting hope for the community.

Somewhere right now:
• a widow is praying for provision
• a child is hoping to stay in school
• a volunteer is walking miles to check on a family

This is why WOW - Working for Orphans & Widows exists. Compassion begins when we stop long enough to notice others.

Filipina, 59, is living with HIV and receiving treatment for Cryptococcal Meningitis, yet she continues caring for Napilira, who became bedridden after a stroke linked to HIV and high blood pressure.

During a recent home visit, Home-Based Care volunteers prayed with the women and offered support and encouragement. “Life is difficult for both of us," Filipina said, "but we thank God we are not completely alone.”

Home Based Care helps people like Filipina and Napilira, who have no one else to help them. Visit WowMission.com and learn more about WOW - Working for Orphans & Widows and our focus on Home Based Care.

This update from our Malawi partners with Somebody Cares Ministries is only one example of how the bicycles provided last Christmas bless our Home Based Care volunteers.

For five years, 51-year-old Kondwani Mandaaliza has faithfully served as a Home-Based Care volunteer in Chatimba, walking nearly 12km through heat, dust, and muddy roads to reach patients many had forgotten.

He travelled on foot to check medication, fetch water, clean homes, and sit beside the sick and bedridden who had no one else. But the distance forced him decide who he could reach and who would have to wait.

“I would lie awake thinking about the people I failed to reach,” Kondwani shared. “I knew they were waiting for me.”

Everything changed when he received a bicycle. What once took nearly three exhausting hours on foot now takes just 30 minutes by bicycle, allowing him to reach more homes and care for more people each week.

His visits increased from 2 patients a week to 6. In just one month, he conducted 24 home visits, supported 10 primary caregivers, and escorted 4 patients to hospital. Most importantly, the elderly man who once suffered alone is now visited every week.

“Now I no longer think about who I must leave behind,” Kondwani says. “I think about how many people I can reach.”

WOW-Working for Orphans & Widows makes thousands of HBC visits every year. These are made by our “army” of local church volunteers (mainly widows themselves) who lovingly care for the sick and the dying with great dignity. When you support WOW-Working for Orphans & Widows, you are helping volunteers like Kondwani reach more people in need.
