Halton Food for Thought

Halton Food for Thought Fueling our Future by providing students universal access to nutritious foods at school. Donate today Who is Halton Food for Thought?

Our Vision is that no student goes hungry at school. As the local charity partnering with the community to help provide nutritious meals and snacks to Halton students, HFFT supports learning and healthy development. There are a variety of reasons why young people start their day hungry including lengthy commutes, hectic morning routines, and rising poverty rates. Regardless of the reason, HFFT aims to support students to be ready to learn and to ensure they have access to healthy food at school.

Halton Food for Thought started with parents.

In 1997, a group of them noticed that not every child at school had food in their lunch box, and that for many the food they had did not contain enough to fuel a day of learning. Rather than wait for someone else to solve it, they formed a committee and started six programs.

Twenty-nine years later it is 163 schools and 96,876 students a day, and it is still built the same way: by parents, volunteers, school staff and communities who decide it matters.

Universal access means all students at a partner school are encouraged to participate in their Student Nutrition Program—no registration, no cost, and no stigma.

This approach helps ensure students can access healthy food in a way that feels welcoming and supporting our programs to reach every student who needs access to nourishing food.

Halton Food for Thought will open Student Nutrition Programs in 163 schools this September. More than 10 schools remain on the waiting list.

Nearly 30% of Halton youth have reported that they face some form of food insecurity at home. Student Nutrition Programs are the region's universal response: free of charge, open to every student, delivered in partnership with the Halton District School Board and the Halton Catholic District School Board, under the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services.

Reaching the schools still waiting is a question of funding, not of willingness. We welcome conversations with anyone in a position to help close that gap.

Our programs run on volunteers.

Every school year, parents, grandparents, students, retired teachers and community members give a morning a week to set out carts, prepare food, restock bins and welcome students in. Programs operate during school hours from September to June, and most shifts are under two hours.

If you have a morning to give this year, we would like to hear from you.

There is more than one way to support a Student Nutrition Program.

A one-time gift. A monthly gift through the Nourish and Flourish Fund. A workplace or service club fundraiser. A school food drive. A corporate partnership. Groups and businesses across Halton do all of these, and every route ends up in the same place: food on a cart in a school in this region.

If you are working out what your group or business wants to do this year, send us a message and we will find the right fit.
