Thank you for making the 2026 Ontario Bike Summit such a success! 🚲

Over the past few days, we shared ideas, explored solutions and discussed how to build healthier, safer and more connected communities.

One message stood out: transportation decisions should be grounded in both evidence and people. While congestion is a frustration we all share, providing more transportation choices, not fewer, is key to moving Ontario forward.

And cycling is a choice that will lessen congestion – it doesn’t cause it. The person on a bike beside you is the car that isn’t, which is good for us all.

Our recent provincial polling data done by Abacus Data showed strong support for provincial investments in cycling infrastructure, while our Summit discussions highlighted the innovation taking place and led by Ontario’s municipal leaders.

Congratulations to the City of Ottawa and the City of Waterloo, Ontario's first Platinum Bicycle Friendly Communities, and our sincere thanks to Peter Gilgan for helping launch Bikeability Ontario with a generous $25,000 donation.

NEW ONTARIO POLL RESULTS

Released to coincide with the annual Ontario Bike Summit, hosted by the Share the Road Cycling Coalition, one of Canada's premier gatherings of cycling and active transportation leaders, industry representatives, municipal leaders and advocates, a new poll finds that Ontarians want local communities making local transportation decisions while they continue to support investments by the provincial government in cycling infrastructure.

📊 64% of Ontarians believe municipalities, not the provincial government, should decide where bike lanes are located on local roads.

🚲 86% agree roads should be safe for everyone, whether they drive, cycle, walk, or take transit.

🚲 72% agree cycling infrastructure makes roads safer for all road users.

🚲 65% support provincial investment in cycling infrastructure because it improves road safety.

🚲 80% support expanded road safety education for people using bicycles, e-bikes, and e-scooters.

The findings point to a collaborative path forward: provincial investment in safe cycling infrastructure and local decision-making on transportation infrastructure.

The results also indicate that commitments to road safety and active transportation are resonating with voters, with nearly half (46%) of Ontarians saying they are more likely to support candidates who champion these priorities.

At the same time, safety concerns remain the top reason many Ontarians don't ride a bike more often.

The message from Ontarians is clear: safer roads matter, and local communities should have a strong voice in shaping transportation decisions.

Together, riders, sponsors, donors, and supporters helped raise $30,000 to support the launch of Bikeability Ontario — a new province-wide cycling skills education program.

This funding will help develop the pilot program, curriculum, instructor training, and tools needed to give children, families, and riders of all ages the knowledge, skills, and confidence to ride safely.

With another municipal election cycle underway, our Founder and Board Chair, Eleanor McMahon, takes a closer look at how cycling policy is becoming increasingly politicized — and what that means for the future of safer, more connected communities.

What does it really take to build a bicycle-friendly community?

At this year’s Ontario Bike Summit, our Bicycle Friendly Communities (BFC) Workshops will bring together municipal staff, committee members, advocates, and community leaders for practical, real-world conversations about how communities can make meaningful progress on cycling.

You’ll hear directly from four of our designated BFC communities leading the way:
✨ Waterloo — BFC Gold
✨ Ottawa — BFC Gold
✨ Kingston — BFC Silver
✨ Durham Region — BFC Bronze and the first regional government in Ontario to be designated.

Each will share insights in a fast-paced lightning round, highlighting the strategies, partnerships, and on-the-ground approaches that helped them move the needle.

Then it’s your turn. We’ll open the floor for an ask-them-anything conversation where participants can dig into the details — from navigating internal processes and building support to overcoming common challenges and identifying the next steps toward becoming more bicycle-friendly.

If you work in a municipality, serve on a cycling or active transportation committee, are part of an advocacy organization, or simply want to help make your community safer and more welcoming for people who bike, this workshop is for you.

In June 2006, OPP Sergeant Greg Stobbart was killed by a careless driver while out on a training ride. His loss brought cyclists together in grief, solidarity, and hope — and that first gathering became the Share the Road Gran Fondo.

We’re happy to welcome back to the Share the Road Gran Fondo for our 20th anniversary!

Steam Whistle has been part of our post-ride celebrations in years past, so we’re especially excited to have them back as we mark this milestone year.

The inaugural Share the road Gran Fondo was hosted in 2006 following the tragic death of OPP Sergeant Greg Stobbart who tragically lost his life while training in Milton. Greg’s loss inspired the launch of a movement, and the Share the Road Cycling Coalition. The annual event features the roads that Greg trained on in the beautiful hills of Halton region.

For the last two decades, the Coalition’s mission has been to improve the relationship between motorists and cyclists, and to enhance safety through advocacy and legislative change.

Proceeds from this 20th anniversary event will support the development and launch of Bikeability for Ontario, a new cycling skills education program that the Share the Road Cycling Coalition is developing to enhance road safety, and give our children healthy habits for life, in communities across the province.

Join us on September 20th at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre in Milton for 40 km, 80 km, or 110 km of riding, featuring Steam Whistle beverages.

We’re grateful to have a longtime partner back with us for this milestone year and look forward to celebrating 20 years of riding, community, and connection together.
