On this day 72 years ago, Hurricane Hazel brought intense rainfall to southern Ontario and caused devastating flooding. More than 80 people lost their lives, and thousands of people were left without homes across the GTA and surrounding watersheds.

Today, Hurricane Hazel’s legacy still shapes where and how we build our communities. 🌊

Using advanced computer models, engineers can simulate what would happen if Hurricane Hazel’s rainfall fell in our watershed today. These models help identify areas at risk of flooding and are used to guide decisions about where development can safely happen.

By keeping flood hazard maps up to date and regulating development in flood-prone areas, Conservation Halton and other Conservation Authorities help ensure the lessons of Hurricane Hazel are not forgotten and that people, property and infrastructure are protected.

The 20th annual Halton Children’s Water Festival has officially come to an end!💧✨

Our biggest takeaway from 20 years of HCWF is simple: curiosity matters! When we give young people the opportunity to ask questions, get outside and experience their environment firsthand, we help create the water stewards of tomorrow.

Thank you to every student, teacher, volunteer, activity provider, partner and supporter who helped make this milestone year possible.

It takes a community to make waves. 🌊
 
For 20 years, the Halton Children’s Water Festival has been powered by an incredible network of teachers, students, volunteers, activity providers, community organizations, sponsors and partners.
 
Every person who leads an activity, helps a class find its way, sets up a station, shares their expertise or encourages a young learner plays a part in the experience.
 
This morning, we celebrated all the people who have helped make 20 years of HCWF possible. 💙
