Meet Whinny the Eastern Screech Owl! 🦉💚

Whinny is being raised behind the scenes by our Raptor Centre staff who are preparing this bird to eventually join our Education team and participate in our Animal Programs.

Whinny was hatched in human care right here in Ontario and joined us at Mountsberg on May 21, 2026, at just 13 days old!

By acquiring Whinny at such a young age, staff can get an early start exposing Whinny to all the things that are part of life as an education bird. These early opportunities for learning and development mean Whinny will experience a high level of welfare throughout their life.

We don’t yet know whether Whinny is a boy or a girl – that will only be determined once Whinny has finished growing and will be based on their weight and size.

While Whinny is currently living behind the scenes, you may be lucky enough to spot them outside with a Raptor Centre staff member as they take in the big wide world!

Today is the first day of Pride Month and Conservation Halton is proud to celebrate the 2SLGBTQI+ community in our watershed—including many of our staff, volunteers, partners and visitors.

Today, we raise the Pride flag across our parks as a reminder that nature is for everyone.

As a Rainbow Registered accredited organization, Conservation Halton is committed to fostering spaces rooted in inclusion, respect, safety, and belonging…because everyone deserves to show up as their most authentic selves!

We will continue working to create welcoming and supportive experiences for all throughout the year. 🌿🌈

Help Protect Nesting Bank Swallows at South Shell Park! 🐦

The artificial nesting wall at South Shell Park is supporting breeding/nesting activity for Bank Swallows along the shoreline of Lake Ontario.

Bank swallows are sensitive to disturbance during their breeding/nesting period from May to August, and any activity near the nesting wall may impact their ability to successfully nest in the burrows.

If you are visiting the shoreline area, you can help protect this important habitat by:
🪶 Viewing birds from a distance

🪶 Staying off the rocks and away from the nesting wall

🪶 Keeping dogs on leash and away from the nesting wall and habitat area

🪶 Avoiding climbing or gathering near the nesting wall

🪶 Helping others learn about the importance of protecting wildlife nesting habitat
