This year marks the 40th anniversary of Tartan Day in Canada – a great excuse to give a little love to the modern McFarlane tartan we wear with pride.

For Brussels Legion Pipes and Drums, our tartan isn’t just “the kilt.” It’s a link to Scottish roots, to the pipe band tradition passed down through generations, and to the communities we serve every time we play a parade, concert, or local ceremony.

If you’ve ever wondered why tartan matters: it’s history you can wear – and music you can march to.

Even if it’s not in our own repertoire right now, you can’t talk about pipe band history without mentioning "The Minstrel Boy." It’s a staple for many of our neighboring bands here in the area, and for good reason!

Written by Thomas Moore in the early 1800s, this tune was set to a traditional Irish air. It tells the story of a young warrior-musician who tore his harp strings rather than see his music used for a cause he didn’t believe in.

It’s a song of sacrifice and standing up for what’s right: values we respect and uphold at Brussels Legion Pipes and Drums.
