The County of Newell has secured $383,200 in funding to support the installation of a solar-powered micro-generation system at the County administration and shop facilities. The project is expected to offset the power consumption of the County’s main administrative complex and support long-term energy sustainability efforts. A huge thank you to all of our amazing EcoBrooks volunteers who participated in the City of Brooks Community Clean-Up last weekend!

We’d also like to give a special shoutout to BAMMA for partnering with us during the clean-up.

It’s always inspiring to see community members and organizations come together to make a positive impact.

And while one clean-up may be over, another is already in the works…

Today is a great reminder that even small actions can make a big difference right here in our community. From conserving water and planting native species to reducing waste and keeping our green spaces clean - everything we do adds up.

Living in southern Alberta, we know how important our land, water, and ecosystems are - not just for today, but for future generations. Whether it’s enjoying Lake Stafford, supporting local green initiatives, or simply being mindful of our impact, there are so many ways to care for the place we call home.

‼️ Invasive Species Alert: Pale Yellow Iris Detected in the EID ‼️

We have recently confirmed the presence of Pale Yellow Iris, 𝘐𝘳𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘴𝘦𝘶𝘥𝘢𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘶𝘴, along the north shore of Lake Newell Reservoir. This invasive, prohibited noxious plant poses risks to native vegetation, disrupts wetland ecosystems, and can be toxic to livestock if consumed.

We have partnered with the County of Newell to assess the affected areas and plan appropriate management actions for this upcoming spring. If you believe you have identified this plant elsewhere in the District, please take a photo and report the location through the Newell Connect app.

We appreciate the community’s cooperation in protecting our irrigation system and natural areas. Stay tuned as we share more information this week!
