Today marks the beginning of National AccessAbility Week, this year’s theme, β€œBuilding a Strong, Accessible Canada,” reminds us that accessibility is not only about ramps, technology, policies, or services. It is about creating communities where people with disabilities are welcomed, known, respected, and valued for their gifts and contributions.

We believe that people with disabilities should have access to the good things in life: meaningful relationships, valued social roles, opportunities to contribute, places of belonging, and the ability to make choices about their own lives.

Accessibility means removing barriers in physical spaces, communication, employment, technology, transportation, services, and community life. It also means challenging the quieter barriers: low expectations, exclusion, isolation, and systems that make decisions about people instead of with people.

The 2026 to 2028 Accessibility Plan from Public Services and Procurement Canada highlights continued work in areas such as culture, employment, environment, communication, technology, procurement, service design, and transportation. These priorities matter, accessibility must be built into everyday life, not treated as an afterthought.

Building a strong and accessible Canada begins locally, in neighbourhoods, workplaces, schools, faith communities, recreation spaces, businesses, and ordinary places where people gather. It means supporting people to be seen not only as recipients of support, but as friends, employees, volunteers, neighbours, leaders, artists, citizens, and contributors.

A truly accessible Canada is one where everyone has the opportunity to participate fully, make choices, share their gifts, and experience the good things in life.
