✅ Let's end Ageism - and Elder Abuse!
🔹 Ageism isn’t just unfair—it’s harmful. It shapes how society treats and can lead to neglect, isolation, and abuse.
Everyone deserves to age with dignity, safety, and respect.

Not a topic that people want to talk about, but an important one.

Our most recent resource toolkit is a brief introduction to older adults and su***de. You’ll learn about statistics, warning signs for su***de, why older adults are at risk for su***de, and how these su***des can be prevented.

In Canada, middle-aged adults die by su***de in the highest numbers and older adults—particularly older men—have the highest rates of su***de.

The good news is that su***de is preventable, and there are actions everyone can take to prevent su***de.

National Seniors Day Celebrated in Brantford
There was plenty to celebrate in Brantford on Thursday, October 1, as community members gathered at Harmony Square to recognize National Seniors Day and the many contributions older adults make to our community.

Hosted by the City of Brantford, the morning brought together the Grand River Council on Aging and older adults, community partners, local leaders and supporters for a celebration filled with appreciation and community spirit.

The event began on a lively note with a Town Crier proclamation, setting a festive tone and officially recognizing National Seniors Day. Those attending enjoyed the opportunity to connect, share a few laughs and celebrate the experience, knowledge and contributions of older adults.

The gathering was also a reminder of the importance of creating communities where people can remain informed, engaged, connected and valued as they age.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the morning so enjoyable. It was a wonderful celebration of National Seniors Day and of the older adults who help make our community stronger, healthier and more vibrant.

CARP just learned of the passing of the wonderful Edna Levitt. Sharing her inspirational story of getting fit in her 50s, at ideacity 2009. A reminder of the importance of physical fitness in maximizing your health as you age. Get moving! As Edna says from the stage, "It's never to late to start weight training, never!.... it's the best thing that we can do for ourselves."

In his LinkedIn post promoting this inflammatory article, author, Ali Amad says he is not blaming seniors. The Maclean’s magazine cover, however, accuses boomers of “hoarding” wealth, and the article describes seniors as obstacles to reform as he criticizes the entire generation.

(Go ahead, read it... Tell us what you think)
https://shrlnk.ca/s/NKESZNur

He also says he seeks solutions that do the most good and least harm. But he does not seriously assess the harm he's so willing to inflict.

He endorses eliminating a tax credit used by some retirees on modest incomes while masking changes as only asking affluent seniors to accept a little less.

A retired renter living on $40,000 a year would need to know whether their taxes would rise and whether any replacement benefit would compensate them. He says the poorest seniors would be protected, but fails to mention how.

In his exuberance to join the intergenerational fight, Mr. Amad also gets the arithmetic wrong. He describes the federal Age Amount as being worth $9,028 annually. That is the amount used to calculate the credit. Using the 2025 figures he cites, the ordinary maximum tax saving is $9,028 × 14.5% = $1,309.06, provided the senior has sufficient federal tax payable to use it.

His figure is almost seven times that amount.. and because this is clearly opinion rather than reporting, facts may be of secondary importance.

Before arguing that seniors should lose this tax relief, he ought to get its value right.

His accounting is selective, too. Mr. Amad presents seniors’ benefits as an $83-billion annual bill. His comparison for younger Canadians stops at EI, the Canada Child Benefit and childcare. Employment and tuition tax credits, first-home savings incentives and other supports available before retirement are absent from that tally. Those are public supports, too. And he all together omits the fact that those baby boomers (including those much loathed and envied homeowners) are paying an astronomical amount of tax.
A proper comparison would include all the numbers.

Before declaring a generational rip-off, he should put both sides of the ledger in front of his readers.

Mr. Ali Amad also endorses a change to OAS that he does little to explain: moving the clawback from individual income to household income. Under the existing rules, each person’s income determines whether their OAS is reduced. Under Kershaw’s proposal, a spouse’s income would also count. A retired couple with $55,000 each would exceed the proposed $100,000 household threshold, although neither comes close to the existing individual threshold. Describing the change simply as asking affluent retirees to accept less is the smoke and mirrors trick that Generation Squeeze has been playing all this time. An income of $100,000 supporting two people is a different proposition from $100,000 supporting one.

Until those gaps are addressed, his confident claims about fairness and limited harm carry zero weight.

Good news for our members in British Columbia. The province is expanding public access to RSV vaccinations for all adults 75+ as part of a one-year program. You can get yours through pharmacies and public health units as of September 29th. It's also worth noting that, during the upcoming respiratory illness season, it is safe to get the RSV vaccine at the same time as your flu and COVID-19 shots.

This is a big win for the seniors in the province - and for CARP. For years, we have been petitioning for the expansion of adult vaccine programs to include ALL the expert-recommended ones. Four of our 'Big 5' are now covered in BC, with only the shingles vaccine representing out-of-pocket costs. Improving access to adult immunization is a key strategy for keeping Canadian seniors healthy and independent. With our members, we will keep the momentum going to ensure this program becomes permanent.

You can learn more about the dangers of RSV and why you should get vaccinated on the CARP website. https://www.carp.ca/2026/08/26/rsv-the-hidden-threat-to-canadian-seniors/

Today marks World Alzheimer's Day. Dementia and Alzheimer's disease affects 750,000 Canadians, and in less than four years that number is expected to balloon to a million. But early detection and lifestyle choices can make a real difference. In fact, simply by avoiding things like alcohol, air pollutants, smoking and social isolation, and managing conditions like weight, diabetes, hearing and vision loss, and cholesterol, you can greatly reduce your risk. While a cure is many years away, there was some hopeful news last week, when Health Canada approved a second disease-modifying drug for use at the early stages of the disease.

There hasn't been much good news to report on Alzheimer's disease, but this is tremendous for Canadians. https://shrlnk....

It is with profound sadness that the current and former staff of CARP mourn the passing of our colleague, friend and mentor, Bill VanGorder.

Bill was part of the heart and conscience of CARP. Over nearly two decades, he served our organization in almost every way imaginable—as the founding Chair of CARP Nova Scotia, a volunteer, national board member and Treasurer, senior staff member, Chief Policy Officer, Chief Advocacy and Education Officer, and, most recently, Advocacy and Education Officer Emeritus.

But titles could never capture what Bill meant to us. He was wise, generous, funny, endlessly curious and always ready to help. He had an uncanny ability to meet someone from virtually anywhere in Canada and immediately discover a connection to their hometown, their YMCA, their theatre, their Rotary club or someone they both knew.

Bill gave older Canadians a strong, credible and compassionate voice. Whether appearing before a parliamentary committee, speaking with the media, advising a colleague or helping a CARP chapter, he brought experience, conviction and humanity to everything he did. He believed deeply that growing older should never mean becoming less visible, less valued or less involved.

In April, we celebrated Bill’s remarkable service as he retired from his formal roles with CARP:

Only recently, Bill received a Lifetime Achievement Award at a gathering hosted by the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia—a fitting recognition of his extraordinary life of service and advocacy:

We invite you to take a few moments to read Bill’s obituary and learn more about the many people, organizations and communities touched by his remarkable life:

To Esther, Bill’s family and the many communities that loved him, we offer our deepest condolences.

Bill’s voice, spirit and example are woven into CARP. He made our organization better, and he made all of us better. We will miss him more than words can say.

As incredulous as it may seem in August, the fall respiratory illness season is just around the corner. Consider getting the Respiratory Syncytial Virus vaccine when you get your flu and COVID shots - for many aged 60 and older, especially if you have underlying health issues, the vaccine is free. Here’s why that’s so important: In Canada, more than 23,000 adults over the age of 60 are estimated to be hospitalized with RSV annually. Scarier still, approximately one in nine patients over the age of 65 who are hospitalized with RSV die within 30 days of admission. As winds down, learn how to protect yourself.

When the weather turns cold in Canada, most older adults know the drill: it’s time for your flu and COVID-19 shots. But there is another respiratory virus quietly causing thousands of hospitalizations and deaths among Canadian seniors every year: Respiratory Syncytial Virus or RSV. While many peop...
