Our KICKOFF is this weekend, and while I have my own issues with a.i., we tried to stage this photo in real life and one our volunteers was trampled pretty badly. (Horses do not like it when you zip up a jersey and it catches their skin. Good to know for next time.)

There will be several route options and pace groups, including road, gravel, and MTB options. Ride rollout starts at 10:00 AM from The Paris Beer Co., followed by Clever Hans Zero tastings and post-ride patio hangs.
 
To join the ride, all riders must complete both the Try-a-Ride RSVP and Rider Waiver.

Do we dream of a city where people can ride their bikes from one end of town to the other on safe and marked bike lanes? Yes.

Are we as organized as the complainers who stand in the way of these dreams instead of helping build a city where you don’t always need a car for every single trip? Evidently.

The argument against bike lanes is usually about cost. The evidence increasingly says that argument has it backwards.

A report from the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy, supported by the FIA Foundation, found that networks of protected bicycle lanes can be remarkably cost-effective. In the cities it studied, these networks created more economic value each year than they cost to build, paying for themselves in under a year once you account for transport savings and the health benefits of more people exercising. On that measure they outperformed far more expensive projects, including metro rail.

The safety case is just as strong. One of the most comprehensive studies of road safety, led by researchers at the University of Colorado Denver, found that it was not the number of cyclists that made a city safer, but the infrastructure built for them. Separated, protected lanes were linked to fewer fatalities for all road users, not only those on bikes.

The type of lane matters enormously. Research from Canadian cities including Toronto and Vancouver found that physically separated cycle tracks were far safer than painted lanes, and far better at convincing hesitant people to ride in the first place. Paint on the road, it turns out, does relatively little. A kerb or a row of bollards does a great deal.

Put together, the picture is hard to argue with. Protected lanes save lives, cut emissions, ease congestion, and often return their cost within a year. For cities still treating them as a luxury or a nuisance, the data suggests they are one of the best value investments a transport budget can make.

There's still time!

Today is the day. 💜💛

This one means a lot to us.

All day today, we’re gathering at our Cafe in support of our friend Hope, her mom Abbey, and their family as they continue navigating life with Cystic Fibrosis.

Hope and Abbey will be at the café with us today, and it would mean the world to see this community show up around them, whether that’s for a coffee, a hug, a lap around the neighbourhood, a flower arrangement, a donation, or just a few kind words.

Spencer and Jim are taking on 50km today, ten 5km loops around the neighbourhood, to raise awareness for CF and support Hope’s medical fund. You can cheer them on, walk a lap with them, or simply stop by and be part of something good.

We’ll be at 174 Brant Ave from 8am-4pm, and there’s so much happening:

💜 Sign a purple heart for our community art project when you complete a lap
💛 Purchase a yellow heart in-café, every dollar goes directly to Hope’s medical fund
☕ $2 from every 320g bag of coffee sold will be donated
🍋 Lavender Lemonade profits will be donated
💐 Limited purple & yellow floral arrangements from Belle Florals-Brantford, with 100% of proceeds going to Hope’s medical fund
🎶 Live music by The Corduroys starting at 1:30pm

May is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month, but for us, it’s personal.

It’s about showing up for someone we care about. It’s about reminding Hope and Abbey that they are surrounded by people who love them, support them, and are walking beside them.

Some days community looks like big fundraising goals.

And some days it looks like buying a coffee, signing a heart, walking one lap, bringing your kids by, sharing this post, or standing on the sidewalk cheering someone on.

It all matters.
