Mohawk Village Memorial Park

Mohawk Village Memorial Park The Mohawk Village Memorial Park is a federally registered not-for-profit corporation with charitable status.

Our mission is to develop and maintain the Mohawk Village Memorial Park to honour the children who attended the Mohawk Institute (Mush Hole). Our organization is managed and governed by a Board of Directors that consists of Residential School survivors and descendants. Each director brings unique employment expertise and professional achievements that offer a broad working knowledge needed to make

decisions effectively for the park. The Board's emotional connection to this site provides the drive and determination critical to making the park's development a success. These individuals are from Six Nations of the Grand River Territory as well as surrounding communities. Because this is a community initiative, we take input seriously and if feasible will implement it if design alterations are possible. Features in the park were selected to help restore what was lost in many of the former students lives, areas like the pavilion, fire-pit area, ceremonial circle can be a place where traditional ways, family togetherness and the connection to the land can be enjoyed. Moving Forward: A commemoration committee has been formed with a goal of transforming the 5 acres around the Mohawk Institute into a memorial park. The park is in honor of First Nations children who attended all Residential Schools. Design and development ideas are welcome from any survivors across Canada or the United States. A fund raising campaign has been launched to fund this project. Please visit our website for more information or to make a donation. ALL funds raised will go directly towards construction and operational costs of the park.

Today is one of those moments that will stay with me for a long time. Today I had the profound honour of watching 'The Nature of Healing' at Caledon Community Services, in the presence of the filmmaker, Faith Howe, and two of its Elders and Survivors, Grandmother Dawn Hill and Grandmother Sherlene Bomberry. After years of teaching about Residential Schools in my LINC classes, to finally sit with Survivors themselves was both humbling and transformative. Their courage in sharing stories that carry so much pain, yet so much resilience, is a gift to all of us.
What struck me:
*The courage it takes to speak truths that many have tried to silence.
*The depth of intergenerational trauma, loss, and grief ... but also the resilience, determination, and love that refuse to be extinguished.
*That healing is not “over” for these Survivors ... it is ongoing, collective, cultural, spiritual.
*The power of seeing survivors not just as victims, but as truth-bearers, culture keepers, teachers.
Thank you, Faith Howe, for guiding us on this journey with such dignity, care, and intention. And thank you, Grandmother Dawn Hill and Grandmother Sherlene Bomberry, for sharing your voices, your wisdom, your truth. Your presence in that room changed hearts.
Thank you Cathy Perennec McLean , Geraldine Aguiar & Art Rekhtin, PMP, OCELT for this incredible opportunity .

If you haven’t watched "The Nature of Healing" yet, please do. It’s not just a film... it’s a call: to listen, to learn, to recognize, and to heal together.
