Happy Pride Month!

June is Pride Month — a time to celebrate the strength, diversity, and resilience of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, and to reaffirm the importance of inclusion, dignity, and respect for all.

At the H.A.C., we believe that every person deserves to be treated with respect and kindness, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression. Through our programs, services, and community partnerships, we are committed to fostering an environment where everyone feels a sense of belonging and has opportunities to connect, grow, and participate fully in community life.

This Pride Month, the H.A.C. proudly stands with 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals, families, friends, and allies throughout Haldimand, Norfolk, and beyond. Together, we celebrate diversity, promote inclusion, and continue working toward communities where everyone can live authentically and be embraced for who they are. 🌈✨

As we celebrate Pride Month, it's crucial to hold space for the fact that over 20% of Black 2SLGBTQI+ individuals have shared a heartbreaking reality: they don't feel safe expressing love to their partners openly. The 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan Survey Results bring these stories to light, reminding us that behind each percentage is a voice, a person, a lived experience that deserves to be acknowledged and supported.

At WorQshop, we're deeply committed to transforming these experiences into action. We offer training sessions and consultations aimed at nurturing safer and more inclusive environments in health and social services, as well as workplaces. Our programs are thoughtfully crafted and delivered by a passionate, multidisciplinary team made up of 2SLGBTQIA+ community members themselves. Together, we can create spaces where everyone feels safe to love openly and be their authentic selves. Let's join hands and make a difference, one training session at a time.

The 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan Survey (25,636 respondents across Canada, 2020–2021) found housing situations vary widely. Some groups were more likely to pay full rent, while others relied more on subsidized housing or shared living arrangements.

We haven’t. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Due to homophobia and transphobia, LGBTQ identities have been included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (the DSM). The first edition of the DSM was published in 1952, and multiple revised editions have been released since.

In 1974, due to growing evidence and protest, a majority of APA membership agreed to remove homosexuality from the manual. Although homosexuality was delisted in the 1980 edition (the DSM-III), variations of the listing remained until 1986. Since 1980, Gender Identity Disorder, or trans identity, has been listed as a disorder. The fifth edition of the DSM, released in 2013, introduces the term ”Gender Dysphoria” to replace previous terms.

A Gender Dysphoria diagnosis can provide clarity and help gender diverse people receive necessary gender affirming healthcare. It can also pathologize and stigmatize trans and non-binary people. While complex, we envision a world wherein 2SLGBTQIA+ experiences are not pathologized, but cared for.

Healthcare is a fundamental right that should be accessible and inclusive for everyone, regardless of their identity or abilities. It's deeply concerning that over 30% of 2SLGBTQI+ individuals who also live with disabilities feel their healthcare providers lack sufficient understanding and knowledge about their sexual orientation, gender identity, and unique needs.

On top of that, a staggering 1 in 4 individuals in this community encounter discrimination when seeking medical care, which is unacceptable in today's society. As a community, we must advocate for comprehensive training and awareness among healthcare professionals to ensure they are equipped to provide respectful, informed, and sensitive care to all patients.

Let’s work together to create a healthcare system that embraces diversity and promotes equality for everyone, ensuring that no one is left behind. It's time to push for substantial changes and fight for the rights and dignity of 2SLGBTQI+ people with disabilities.

The results of the 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan Survey reveal important insights concerning the experiences of individuals with disabilities within this community. Notably, those who identify as having a disability are statistically more prone to encountering violence or discrimination, often as a result of homophobia, transphobia, or biphobia, compared to their counterparts who do not have a disability.

Furthermore, individuals with disabilities report feeling less included and represented within 2SLGBTQI+ community spaces. This highlights a significant disparity in how community support and representation are perceived and experienced by different groups within the community.

In workplace settings, 2SLGBTQI+ individuals with disabilities express a lower level of comfort in sharing their sexual orientation and gender identity with their coworkers. This suggests a need for more inclusive and supportive environments that encourage open dialogue and acceptance, ensuring that all members of the 2SLGBTQI+ community feel safe and respected.

Understanding these challenges is essential for developing strategies to foster inclusivity and address the specific needs of 2SLGBTQI+ individuals with disabilities. We take into account how 2SLGBTQIA+ identities interact with other aspects of identity such as race, class, ability and religion.

“Nothing about us, without us” – A phrase commonly used in disability and/or Indigenous advocacy work, we apply this ideology to ensure our training is developed and facilitated by 2SLGBTQIA+ scholars, social workers, healthcare workers, and community members.
