Keith here. Today was a huge reminder of why I love volunteering — it’s so rewarding.
Early yesterday morning, our amazing farmer friend Mosey down near Norwich called to invite Branching Out Brantford to come and pick sweet corn. Hurray!
With a few quick messages in our incredible volunteer chat group, we had a team ready to spring into action this morning.
We drove through a beautiful morning fog and, as always, were excited to arrive and see the farm bustling with life — the horses, the farm stand, folks working the fields. It really is such an amazing place.
We were given four long rows of corn to pick, and I got to spend the next hour and a half with some of the most wonderful people — picking corn, cracking corny jokes, and having the best time.
By the end, we’d loaded about 1,400 lbs of sweet corn! On the way out, we couldn’t resist stopping at the farm stand to take home some gorgeous produce — huge yellow and red beefsteak tomatoes, watermelons, cabbage, garlic… just amazing. We also left some treats for the farmer’s children, and Farmer Mary said she was impressed by how quickly we picked the corn.
Back in Brantford, the next best part began — sharing 1,400 lbs of fresh sweet corn with the community. Some went to Gifts Of The Heart Brantford, some to Friendship House, and a whole bunch went to a Free Food Pop-Up put on by the incredible folks at Ladybug Creations by BL’s Little Free Pantry, who will also distribute it out to some of their 5 local free pantries as well.
I’m so proud of what we accomplished today and so grateful for the kind and generous volunteers who give their time to help others.
Now I’m going to put my feet up and look forward to some yummy corn and farm-fresh veggies for dinner.
