South Dumfries Historical Society

South Dumfries Historical Society What's going on in heritage matters in South Dumfries, Brant County, and the surrounding area. "Our Community's Past Supports Our Future".

The South Dumfries Historical Society was founded in 2003 to assume the operation of the St. George Museum & Archives that had been set up by the St. George Trade & Tourism Association. Our mission is to “preserve, present, and promote the history of the people and places of the former South Dumfries Township.”

The Society is located in the St. George Memorial Hall building, a former commercial b

uilding that was constructed in 1891 as the Howell Block. In 1925, the building was donated to the community by Mrs. Louise Kitchen for use as a community hall and memorial to the local citizens who served in the Great War. The Hall contained at various times meeting rooms, an auditorium and stage, a radio station, a library, and a post office. It was operated by a board of trustees until the 1950s, when the property was deeded to the Township so the Hall would be eligible for grants for improvements. In 2009, the County of Brant, which had become the owner after the elimination of township governments in the municipality, declared that the Memorial Hall was surplus to the needs in the village and the Society successfully negotiated to become the new owners. The Society now maintains the Memorial Hall as a memorial to the local men and women who have served in the armed forces, as a community hall, and as the St. George Museum & Archives.

While Doors Open along the Grand is a great thing, sometimes open doors are not so good. The Baptist Church in St. George burned down on February 17th, 1911. The present ediface was soon constructed on the same site, with the cornerstone being laid on August 22 of the same year.

What a difference a few alterations make! Here are two photos from the early 20th century of the former Methodist parsonage on Main St. North. It is still there, and has a commanding view of the village. The addition of a front porch, and more substantial stairway to the street and some landscaping made a big difference to the house's appearnce.

So many people liked last week's photo of the Ontario Portland Cement Co. at Blue Lake that I thought some more were in order. Photos are from the Blue Lake and Auburn Women's Institute Tweedsmuir scrapbooks.

There was once a thriving industry around Blue Lake. In the early years of the 20th Century, the clay-like sediment called "marl" was dredged from the bottom of the lake to produce cement. The Ontario Portland Cement Company had a large complex at the lake where the marl was dried and roasted to purify and pulverize it. A small steam train carried the marl from the dredge to the works, and a siding from the main railway line took the finished product away. There were accomodations on site for the workers, a testing laboratory, and even an on-site post office! Very little now remains of the site.

We join our friends and neigjbours in mourning the passing of former County of Brant Mayor Ron Eddy. Ron was an enthusiastic supporter of the Historical Society and was a frequent guest of honour at our events. We extend our sympathies to his family and remember him as a friendly and capable person who truly exemplified the position of "public servant." Thank you for all of your assistance in helping us get on our feet, Ron. You are greatly missed.

Statement on the Passing of Former Mayor Ron Eddy

It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of former County of Brant Mayor Ron Eddy.

Ron Eddy dedicated many years to public service and played an important role in shaping our community.

He served County residents as Reeve of the Township of South Dumfries and Warden of the County of Brant for sixteen years, as well as a Member of Provincial Parliament.

Following amalgamation in 1998, Ron served as Mayor of the County of Brant until 2018, representing the County’s interests with various local and provincial organizations. He was instrumental in establishing the County as a single-tier municipality—bringing together the former townships into a “community of communities”—while promoting growth and prosperity and advocating for agriculture as a key local economic driver.

His legacy will be remembered through the lasting impact of his work and the many contributions he made to the well-being of Brant residents.

As a mark of respect and in recognition of his service, flags at County of Brant facilities have been lowered to half-mast.

On behalf of Council and staff for the County of Brant, we extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of working with or knowing former Mayor Eddy.

Just over 2 weeks until our Annual General Meeting: Sunday April 12 at 2:00 at the St. George Memorial Hall. Our guest speaker will be Hugh Fraser of Ontario Barn Preservation. This week's photo from the archives is of a small barn beside Reid's Pond in St. George. The pond was located in what is now Snowball Park. Share your favorite barn photo (old or new) in the comments!

Spring is officially here and it won't be long until our gardens and fields are bursting with crops, just like this ine. It's probably some of the Howell family, as it comes from the Dorothy Gingritch collection.
