This morning we had a very special visitor.

Quinn Strang, from Moncton, New Brunswick, is currently hitchhiking across Canada to raise funds for cancer research and support families affected by childhood cancer.

At just 15 years old, Quinn was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma in his femur. Ewing sarcoma is a rare and aggressive cancer that primarily affects children, adolescents, and young adults. Following treatment, Quinn underwent a complete femur replacement.

Now 20 years old and in remission, Quinn is determined to help ensure others receive the support they need during their own cancer journeys.

Quinn began his trek with his feet in the Atlantic Ocean in St. John’s, Newfoundland, following Terry Fox’s route across the country until reaching Thunder Bay. His goal is to stand in the Pacific Ocean by June 15, 2026.

Along the way, Quinn hopes to raise $100,000. As of this morning, he has already raised $77,773. Half of all donations will support the Terry Fox Foundation, while the other half will go to the IWK Foundation’s Patient Family Support Trust Fund, which helps families manage the financial burdens that often accompany a pediatric cancer diagnosis.

The Brandon Firefighter Paramedics of IAFF Local 803 were proud to make a donation in support of Quinn’s incredible journey.

As Quinn continues west, we’re challenging our fellow first responders to join us in supporting this remarkable young man. Regina Professional Fire Fighters Association IAFF Local 181, you’re up next!

To learn more about Quinn’s journey, follow his story and consider making a donation to help him reach his goal. Every dollar makes a difference.

The members of Brandon Firefighter Paramedics Local 803 are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Fire Chief John Sparham.

Chief Sparham dedicated his life to serving others through both the volunteer fire service and the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service. His commitment to his community, his leadership, and his passion for the fire service left a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of working alongside him.

On behalf of our members, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Chief Sparham’s family, friends, department members, and all those mourning his loss. The fire service is a close-knit family, and today we stand with our brothers and sisters as they grieve the loss of a respected leader and colleague.

May his years of service, dedication, and sacrifice never be forgotten.

Tremendous leadership by the City of Calgary, this is something the City of Brandon - Local Government desperately needs.

A fire board would create a much more effective governance model, to ensure our fire department is meeting the needs of our community today, and well into the future!

Mayor Jeff Fawcett said in his state of the city address this year, that Brandon is on track to hit 80,000 residents in 14 years, a 45% increase in population. This would be a crucial step towards making sure we are prepared for this.

Congratulations to the City of Calgary, your city will be safer because of this decision and was so important it passed UNANIMOUSLY

Eight years ago today, Brandon Fire & Emergency Services responded to the Christie’s Office Plus fire — a major fire that challenged crews for hours and required a tremendous coordinated effort to bring under control.

Incidents like this are a reminder of the critical importance of a properly staffed fire department. Large-scale fires don’t wait for convenient timing, and neither do medical emergencies, rescues, or overlapping calls happening at the same time elsewhere in the city.

When staffing levels are stretched thin, it impacts response times, firefighter safety, and the ability to effectively protect our community during major incidents. The public often sees the flames and flashing lights, but behind every successful outcome is enough trained personnel to do the job safely and effectively.

Today we remember the hard work of the crews who responded that day, and we continue advocating for the staffing levels our growing community deserves.

🚑 Happy National Paramedic Services Week! 🚑

This week, we recognize and celebrate National Paramedic Services Week — a time to honour the dedication, professionalism, and sacrifice of paramedics across Canada.

Every day, paramedics answer the call in moments of crisis, uncertainty, and tragedy. They provide critical care, comfort, and compassion to people on some of the worst days of their lives — often without hesitation and rarely seeking recognition.

To all paramedics, firefighter/paramedics, dispatchers, and frontline emergency responders: thank you for your commitment to serving your communities with skill, courage, and heart.

From all of us at IAFF Local 803, thank you for everything you do.

Happy National Paramedic Services Week! It is held every year as a week-long celebration to recognize and thank emergency medical services personnel for their valuable service.

This year’s theme, ‘Improving Outcomes, Together' extends beyond medicine. It’s a collective responsibility that involves investing in the people behind the care with fair pay, safe staffing levels, mental health resources, leadership that listens and acts, and opportunities for professional growth. This week, we recognize the people behind the patch and reaffirm our commitment, as partners and communities, to Improving Outcomes, Together.

Thank you today and every day for all you do!
