This month is an opportunity to uplift and celebrate the histories, cultures, strengths, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Canada. It is also a time for reflection, listening, and continued learning as we acknowledge the truths of the past and present.

At YWCA Westman, we are committed to walking alongside Indigenous communities in respect, humility, and ongoing action toward reconciliation. We recognize the importance of creating spaces where Indigenous voices are heard, valued, and centred.

We encourage our community to take time this month to learn, engage, and reflect.

YWCA Westman recognizes and honours Pride Month 🌈

We stand in support of 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals in our community and beyond, and we remain committed to fostering spaces that are safe, inclusive, and respectful for all. Pride Month is a time to reflect, listen, and continue learning as we work toward equity and belonging for everyone.

At YWCA Westman, we believe that everyone deserves to live free from discrimination and to feel seen, valued, and supported. We are proud to stand alongside our community in celebrating diversity in all its forms.

Not all abuse is physical.

Control. Intimidation. Isolation. Fear. Manipulation. These are forms of domestic violence too, even when there are no visible bruises.

Abuse is not always easy to see from the outside, which is why awareness, compassion, and support matter.

If you or someone you know needs help, YWCA Westman’s Crisis Line is available 24/7 and confidential.

A transformative vision is taking shape in Westman.

The YWCA Westman Women’s Campus is a new project designed to support women and their children across southwestern Manitoba through safety, housing, and wrap-around services that promote healing, stability, and hope. Mentioned at this year’s Women of Distinction Awards and supported through community initiatives like the Virden Chamber of Commerce Gord Bamford concert fundraiser, this work is already beginning to build momentum.

The Campus will bring together emergency and supportive housing, community programming, and trauma-informed spaces all under one roof, with culturally grounded and client-centred supports woven throughout.

We are looking forward to bringing this vision to life.

On Friday, May 15, the Supreme Court of Canada came to a landmark judgement to recognize that survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) can claim for civil damages against their abusers more easily.

This is a positive step towards IPV becoming more widely reported and criminalized. Most of all, it recognizes that survivors need to be heard and deserve justice.

Watch our President and CEO Mitzie Hunter speak about the ruling: https://canadianwomen.org/blog/a-landmark-judgement-for-survivors-of-intimate-partner-violence/

On April 30, YWCA Westman was pleased to receive a generous donation from Neelin High School.

Neelin students organized a toy drive, collecting toys and activity items for children supported through YWCA programs. This thoughtful initiative will help bring comfort, joy, and play to kids in our programs.

From everyone at YWCA Westman, thank you to these students for your kindness and community spirit!

On May 6, YWCA Westman was proud to have a staff member take part in McHappy Day in Brandon in support of families and children in our community.

It was a meaningful day of connection, community spirit, and giving back, with proceeds helping support local families through Ronald McDonald House Charities.

We are grateful to be part of a community that shows up for one another in such impactful ways.

A meaningful moment of youth-led impact in action 🤝

YWCA Westman was honoured to receive a cheque presentation from Youth in Philanthropy (YIP) students from Vincent Massey High School and Neelin High School. Through this initiative, students explore community needs, assess local organizations, and decide where funding can make the greatest impact.

Youth in Philanthropy is facilitated by Brandon Area Community Foundation in partnership with United Way West Central Manitoba, giving students across Brandon and Forrest high schools the opportunity to learn, lead, and give back in a meaningful way.

A sincere thank you to the students, school YIP programs, BACF, and United Way West Central Manitoba for choosing YWCA Westman and supporting work that strengthens our community.
