Around 253 million people live with vision impairment
worldwide, of which 36 million are blind. The vast
majority live in low-income settings. More than 80%
are aged 50 years or above. Globally, uncorrected
refractive errors and un-operated cataract are the
top two causes of vision impairment. More than 80%
of all visual impairment can be prevented or cured.
Blindness is largely prevalent in under-developing
countries. 90 % of the world's visually impaired people
live in low-income settings. Malnutrition; inadequate
health & education services; lacking of clean water;
unhygienic & poor sanitation conditions cause a high
rate of eye disease. In the least-developed countries,
and in particular Sub-Saharan Africa, cataracts are
responsible for half of all avoidable blindness. Other
causes include glaucoma (15%), corneal
opacities (10%), trachoma (6.8%),
childhood blindness (5.3%), and Onchocerciasis (4%).

A simple, low-cost, one-time procedure can restore full
sight to patients with cataracts — but in too many
places those procedures are not yet available.
