Connection and coordination are not the same thing.

For decades, regions could rely on shared history, cultural ties, diplomatic relationships, and geographic proximity while operating through fragmented systems.

That environment is changing.

Across the world, capital, trade, and investment increasingly flow toward coordinated systems that reduce friction, improve predictability, and operate at scale.

In East Africa, intra-regional trade remains significantly below its potential despite decades of regional integration efforts. Between Africa and the Caribbean, trade remains a fraction of what existing economic potential suggests is possible.

The challenge is no longer connection.

The challenge is converting connection into coordinated systems that move capital, facilitate trade, and create shared economic value.

Regions that build those systems strengthen their competitiveness.

Regions that do not will increasingly operate within conditions defined by those that do.

The question is no longer whether coordination matters.

The question is whether institutions are building the systems required to make coordination operational.

As the Iran war disrupted global oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, countries across Africa and the Caribbean were hit with rising fuel prices, inflation, currency pressure, and growing food insecurity.

But the deeper problem did not begin with the war.

Guyana received approximately US$2.6 billion in oil revenues in 2024. Around US$2.4 billion of that was used to cover tax obligations on behalf of ExxonMobil and its partners under the countryโ€™s 2016 oil agreement.

That is not just a Guyana story.

It reflects a wider reality across Africa and the Caribbean:
countries rich in resources, yet still among the first to suffer when global crises disrupt fuel, food, and finance.
What to note:
โ€ข 38 of 54 African nations remain net oil importers
โ€ข Fertilizer prices surged across vulnerable economies after the Strait of Hormuz disruption
โ€ข Africa and the Caribbean still lack meaningful strategic fuel reserves
โ€ข Diaspora capital is consumed, not structurally invested
โ€ข Regional coordination exists politically, but not operationally

The Iran war did not create this vulnerability.
It exposed how expensive it has become.

Our latest Carifika Inc article examines what now has to change from regional energy coordination and strategic reserves to diaspora investment and renewable deployment that reduces dependency instead of managing it.

We hope institutions like African Development Bank Group , CARICOM: Caribbean Community, Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) Nigeria, and Caribbean Development Bank engage seriously with the conversation, because the window to act is already narrowing.
