Mental health doesn’t exist in a vacuum.

Our well-being is shaped by the social determinants of health, including housing, income, employment, social support, and access to services.

This World Mental Health Day, let’s look beyond individual experiences and recognize the broader social and systemic conditions that influence well-being. This means challenging stigma, examining systemic barriers, and addressing gaps in access to safe, appropriate, and accessible support.

Mental health is a collective responsibility.

This week is Mental Illness Awareness Week. Understanding mental health and illness means understanding the role gender-based violence play in people’s lives.

Research in Canada has shown that people who experience violence can face significant mental health impacts, including anxiety, depression, fear, and PTSD.

These impacts can affect how survivors experience their everyday lives and access support, and they often continue beyond the immediate experience of violence.

Recognizing the intersection between GBV and mental health is an important part of ensuring survivors have access to the support they need, when they need it.

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Truth and reconciliation require us to acknowledge the role of colonialism and systemic racism in shaping the experiences of Indigenous Peoples and to recognize the intergenerational trauma caused by residential schools and its continued impacts on individuals, families and communities.

Take time today to learn, listen to Indigenous voices, challenge racism and reflect on how you can contribute to meaningful change.

Today, we honour Residential School Survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and recognize the lasting impacts residential schools have had on Indigenous Peoples, families and communities.

As Su***de Prevention Month comes to an end, the work of su***de prevention continues.

Su***de prevention is not limited to raising awareness for one month. It means paying attention to the people around us, checking in when something feels different, listening without judgment, and taking people seriously when they reach out for support.

But su***de prevention cannot rest on individuals alone. The systems and conditions people live within also play a significant role. Access to timely mental health and crisis supports, safe and stable housing, financial security, healthcare, social connection and other essential supports can all shape a person’s well-being and ability to get help when they need it.

That means we need to talk not only about what we can do as individuals, but also about the barriers that make support difficult to access and the changes needed to address them.

This month may be ending, but there is no end date for caring about the people in our lives or working toward systems where people can access support before they reach a crisis point.

If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available:

Victim Services of Peel is proud to celebrate our 40th Anniversary and unveil our new 40th Anniversary Logo! 🎉

In 1986, Victim Services of Peel was incorporated with a clear mission: to provide around-the-clock crisis support to individuals, families, and communities affected by crime and tragedy in Brampton and Mississauga.

Throughout our history, the organization has demonstrated resilience and adaptability, continually expanding programs and services to meet the evolving needs of our community. Last year alone, we provided support to more than 19,000 victims and survivors across our programs.

This milestone would not have been possible without the contributions of our dedicated Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, community partners, funders, sponsors, and donors. Your support, collaboration, and belief in our mission have enabled us to make a meaningful difference in the lives of so many.

Thank you for believing in us, being part of our journey and for your continued support. 💜

Trauma can shape how people respond, communicate, and interact with the world around them. It can affect how someone feels, behaves, builds trust, and navigates everyday situations.

When working with survivors of violence, it’s important to remember that we may not know the full story behind what we see.

Instead of asking, “Why are they acting like that?” we can ask, “What might have happened to them?”

Understanding trauma can help us respond with greater compassion, reduce the risk of re-traumatization, and better support survivors.

Last night, we joined the Peel Committee Against Women Abuse (PCAWA) for Take Back the Night.

is a powerful reminder that everyone deserves to move through their communities with safety, dignity and freedom from violence. It was meaningful to come together with community partners, advocates, survivors and allies to raise awareness, stand in solidarity and continue working toward a future where all people can live free from gender-based violence.

Thank you to PCAWA for organizing this important event and bringing our community together. 💜
