Leadership Series 07
Making it a Diamond Part 05: Cutting Edges

High performing CEOs do not happen overnight. Their years of toil, labour and painstaking commitment to growth culminated in their consistent delivery of results at that apogee niche and celebrated success. Leaders who drive the daily little changes that lead to the big improvements and wins in their organizations have acquired and attained the 'cutting edges.'

The cutting edges are a mix of the professional (skills, education experience) and personal qualities, and achievements that make them understand and deconstruct complex systems and structures, deliver timely results on challenging tasks, sight obstacles in blind spots, detect the noise across algorithms, achieve recognition-worthy results on challenging tasks, and overall are 'sharp knives' for cutting through "hard surfaces" and sharpening "blunt knives."

Nine 'cutting edges' of successful leadership to be discussed in this final part of the leadership series are a)Reliable Intuition b)Triple-Vision c)High Organizational Skills d)Multiple competencies in one piece e)Impact- driven and in-depth Analysis f) High Operational performance g) Well-Harnessed Nine senses h)Educated/Literate and I) High Spiritual Sensitivity.

Leadership Series 07
Making it a Diamond Part 04: Sweeping the scope.

A couple of years ago an order to eliminate terrorists in a hidden camp in an area not located on regular maps was given. The initial group of armed security men that commenced this operation did a good job but some targets were unaccounted for based on the available identifiers/ information on each of this target and log of the neutralized ones. Another batch of more experienced armed security men with more sophisticated weapons and equipment were sent to sweep the location. However, based on the location difficult terrain and topography, coupled with the surrounding archaic housing system, the strategy utilized by this latter batch was modified to sweep the scope. Upon entry into the area, within a 150-metre perimetry, some targets were found in isolated areas within that locality. When the operation was complete, every single target name on the list for that particular location was identified, alive or dead.

'Sweeping the scope' for leadership speaks to the thoroughness in eliminating errors, neutralizing unsuspecting obstacles, minimizing the losses/ preventable harms or rare legal incidents that can surface/erupt in the event of an oversight or haphazardly executed job. Across all sectors, 'sweeping the scope' is an important area leadership should prioritize.

In this part of making it a diamond series, case-based scenarios of 'sweeping the scope' concept across different industries will be discussed. Their uniqueness, strengths and flaws will be discussed. Readers curiosity will be explored in terms of their preferred strategy under these scenarios.

Leadership Series 07: Making it a Diamond Part 03: The Boots in the Shadows

Behind the blinds of the content of that email or procedure or decisions are characters and personalities or experiences that may or may not be known to the leader. They shape the decision or have a great magnitude of influence on the leader, an organization or a community even sometimes without their physical presence in an organization. These are the 'boots in the shadows'. They could be that honest relative who tells you the truth no one else will. They can also be that friend you do not love to have that uncomfortable phone
conversation with on potential growth areas. It could also be that employee who completes their duties and takes on additional duties yet remains humble. 'Boots in the shadows' could be someone or people, informally or seldomly formal in that association or religious body that influence(s) you to maintain your integrity and deliver conscientiously and ethically on responsibilities. When a leader is influenced by honest and ethical 'boots in the shadows' it is reflected across every aspect of their leadership and lifestyle. In contrast when a leader is controlled by 'unscrupulous and unethical boots in the shadows', you see corruption at its worst in leadership. Infact a leader who intentionally obstructs or disrespects their ethical 'boots in the shadows' most times end up screwing up themselves and others.
In this series, varying context of 'boots in
the shadows' and structured formal and
informal approaches in harnessing their contributions and influence to leadership growth and organizational success will be dissected.

Leadership Series 07: Making it a Diamond Part 02 -The Struggles behind the Smiles

Struggles are undeniable realities of all leaders; some leaders have less, others have more and they could be unique or similar. Embracing the struggles, staying focused amidst the contending forces sandwiched between the layers of work to deliver on the job is central to the strength of leadership.
Struggles of leadership differ from person to person, organization to organization and location to location in the following areas:
1. when marketing products/services amidst healthy and unhealthy competition and rivalry,
2. when lobbying for funding
3. recalcitrant negative attitude from internal or external supposed to be allies
4. personal life
5. environment and
6. stage of life/career amongst others.

Sometimes, leadership struggles could be so draining and drive those steering the wheels to the brink of insanity. Surprisingly, the 'diamonds' have or should have an archive-full of these moments and experiences, especially as these have built or are expected to build their character and confidence. These are the ones who wake up the following morning after a tough yesterday, 'build the ships' of their organizations and get recognized as the diamonds of their industry.

In this series, we will discuss common struggles and a few uncommon struggles of leadership and ways great leaders spin their stories of struggles into that of success.

Leadership Series 07
Making it a Diamond 01: Imperfect Perfection

No great leader would ever pose as "Prefect Perfect" always or even prefer a robot's memory to that of a human. To a large extent, recognizing one's area(s)? of weakness(es) and those imperfect moments, owning and improving on them speaks to the imperfect perfection of a true leader. All great leaders people admire or regard as the diamonds of their industries have had so many imperfections which they recognized, accepted and worked on to get to that leadership growth diamond milestone, where they are strong, unbreakable and undeterred by the winds, waves and waters that sank other boats. This imperfect perfection of strong leadership should never be perceived as a weakness.

In this series focus will be on recognizing one's visible and invisible imperfections as an organizational or community leader and real-time, practice-based measures/advice steps to achieve the leadership growth diamond milestone.
