EFRY Hope and Help for Women

EFRY Hope and Help for Women We empower women & girls through a trauma-informed, inclusive, & gender responsive lens. There's Hope, There's Help.

Our client-focused approach strengthens emotional, cultural & social well-being through prevention, support, reintegration, & advocacy. We provide trauma-informed and gender-responsive resources, supports and programs to reduce the marginalization of women and girls. Through innovation, collaboration and advocacy, the organization serves women and girls who are at risk, by providing programs that

address prevention, support, reintegration and advocacy. The Elizabeth Fry Society works to ensure that protective factors, pro-social values and life skills are increased, risks are mitigated, and that women and girls have equal access and safety. As an Agency, we have defined our "community" as being at several levels:

- Our client base
- The Peel, Halton, York & Hamilton communities
- The provincial judicial/correctional systems
- The federal judicial/correctional systems

Corresponding strategies are in place for each stakeholder group. Obviously, each of our clients has very subjective needs, which are addressed by one or more of the Agency’s many programs. These programs are designed to assist clients in developing:

- Responsibility for their own lives
- Respect for self and others
- Positive relations with family, friends and community
- Pro-social values
- Positive problem-solving and life skills

The Agency’s primary focus in all areas of endeavour is pro-active crime prevention, lower recidivism rates, and successful integration into the community as demonstrated through more socially-congruent behaviour. Implicit in the concept of “community corrections” is the shaping of local response to crime. It is anticipated is that communities, inclusive of criminal and social justice professionals, will work together to increase the use of effective and timely responses for those involved in criminal behaviours.

Today, on August 10, we honour Prisoner’s Justice Day by calling for humane conditions, meaningful rights, and real accountability in Ontario’s correctional system. Recent Annual Reports from the Ontario Ombudsman (2025 and 2026) document persistent, systemic failures including chronic overcrowding, prolonged lockdowns, unsafe use of force, inadequate access to health care, and repeated violations of basic rights.

What a day! 💙☀️

Last week, our EFry Community BBQ brought together staff, clients, community partners, volunteers, and friends for an afternoon filled with great food, laughter, connection, and fun.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the day so special. Events like these remind us that building strong communities starts with coming together.

We’re so grateful to everyone who attended and supported this event. ✨

Yesterday was National Indigenous Peoples Day, and throughout June, we continue to recognize National Indigenous History Month.

Today, and every day, we honour the rich histories, cultures, languages, and enduring contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

At EFry Hope and Help for Women, we recognize that truth, reconciliation, and justice require ongoing action. We are committed to learning, listening, and working toward a future where Indigenous women, girls, Two-Spirit, and gender-diverse people are treated with dignity, equity, and respect.

As we reflect this month, we encourage our community to learn about the histories of Indigenous Peoples, support Indigenous voices, and take meaningful steps toward reconciliation.

🧡 Every action matters. Every voice matters.

Creating safer communities and brighter futures takes all of us working together. 💜 nCourage

EFry Hope and Help for Women is proud to partner with organizations across Peel Region through initiatives like nCourage to support prevention, education, and survivor-centred services for those impacted by human trafficking and exploitation.

Through collaboration, shared knowledge, and coordinated support, we can help create pathways to safety, healing, and empowerment.

Thank you to our community partners for the important work you do every day. Together, we are stronger.

Conservative MP Luc Berthold has turned his family’s personal tragedy into a commitment to help others, after losing his son who struggled with substance use and justice system involvement. We support his proposed changes to the Youth Criminal Justice Act that would give judges tools previously limited to adult sentencing. The reforms would expand access to drug‑treatment programs for youth, allow courts to delay sentencing so treatment can occur first, allow requiring drug program attendance for some sentences, and provide courts more options to deal with non‑compliance. There appears to be support across parties. Here’s hoping the bill passes when it comes before the House of Commons in September.
