Meet a tiny winter survivor! ❄️🐢👇

While most snapping turtles emerge in the fall, a rare few spend the entire winter huddled together deep inside their underground nest, waiting for the warmth of June to dig their way out.

Because snapping turtle hatchlings can't handle freezing solid the way some other species can, surviving an entire winter underground is a major biological victory.

This little hatchling officially emerged this week, ready to take on the world after a long, cold wait. 🗓️

🚨 🚨 WELCOME... TO JURASSIC PARK. 🦖🐢

It has officially begun. Today, June 4th, marks the start of "Snappa-geddon"! Our local snapping turtles—aka actual living dinosaurs—have officially started nesting!!!

For the next few weeks, these prehistoric queens will be crossing roads, climbing curbs, and entering backyards to lay their eggs.

How to survive the park:

 ▶️ Watch the roads: Drive with extra caution, especially near wetlands and ponds.

 ▶️ Keep your distance: They are ancient, powerful, and very protective.

▶️ Do not touch their tails: If you must help one cross the road, handle with extreme care (and maybe watch a quick tutorial first).

Nature always finds a way... let’s make sure they do it safely! 🛑👇

Before a new generation begins, there is always a quiet, beautiful preparation. ✨🐢

Right now, beneath the surface of our shorelines, female turtles are gathering in the shallows. 🌊 They are in the pre-nesting staging phase—a period of patient vigilance that can last for weeks before they finally step onto land to create new life. 

They are not merely idling; they are preparing for this incredible journey:

 **Gathering Strength:** ☀️ Basking in the warmer shallow waters to naturally nurture and accelerate the development of their eggs.

 **Observing the Environment:** 👁️ Watching, waiting, and scouting the shoreline for the perfect, welcoming moment—a warm night, a shift in pressure, or a gentle rain. 🌧️

**Conserving Energy:** 🔋 Restfully lounging in the shallows, saving every bit of energy for the wonderful task ahead.

If you see them gathering near the logs and weeds, appreciate the moment. 🍃 It is a definitive sign that nature's window is wide open, and the beautiful miracle of nesting is about to begin. 🥚✨

🐢 **She’s officially the first!** 🐢

It’s June 1st, and nesting season has officially begun! Today, we welcomed our very first nesting painted turtle of the year. 🎉

Our amazing volunteers were on the scene to ensure she could lay her eggs safely. This is the moment we’ve been preparing for all spring, and now the real work begins to protect these precious nests over the coming weeks.

⚠️ **A quick reminder for everyone out enjoying the trails:**

👀 Please keep your eyes on the ground! Turtles are actively on the move looking for the perfect spot to lay their eggs, often crossing paths, roads, and trails.

Let's work together to give them the space and safety they need. If you see a nesting turtle, admire her from a respectful distance and let her do her magic. ✨

Hello Turtle Troopers and Turtle Troopers Fans!

The Heart Lake Community Garden would like to help support the Troopers in building 20 nest boxes for the 2026 season! 

We have some generous support, and have all the wood and mesh we will need.

If you are unable to build on you own, there are a couple other ways you can help! 

Seeking additional materials, such as the 10”spikes, washers and staples and 3” deck screws.

Also looking for volunteers to help Construct on June 6th at the Heart Lake Community Garden! 

We estimate the cost of one nest box is about $25.00, if you would like to show support but do not want to help build and do not have supplies, we are happy to accept cash too! 💯 of all funds will go to nest box creation and any surplus materials will be donated to Turtle Troopers building more boxes. 

If you are able to assist with supplies or would like to volunteer to build, Please reach out to myself thru messenger PM or email [email protected]

🐢 WE HAVE BIG NEWS, BRAMPTON! 🐢

​Our recent City Council delegation (Delegation 6.3 - meetings held May 20th & May 27th) were a massive success! Thanks to your incredible support and the dedication of our team, major steps are being taken to protect local wildlife.

​🏆 The Big Wins:

​🥚 $15,000 in Funding Approved! This city funding will directly support Brampton egg incubation at Scales Nature Park under the ARCC (Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Canada) program!

​🎣 Improved Signage: Approved measures for clearer, responsible fishing signs across Brampton to keep our waters and wildlife safe.
