The John Howard Society of Peel-Halton-Dufferin is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating safer communities by supporting people who have been involved with the criminal justice system. We help our community by providing evidence-based programs and services that hold the individual accountable for their actions while looking beyond the criminal behaviour to address the root causes of crime through education programs and housing support.

John Howard Society of Ontario's Re/Thinking Justice Series: Finding Common Ground highlights key findings related to Canada's bail system, including current challenges and recommendations that promote greater collaboration across the justice sector.

Provincial facilities continue to experience significant capacity pressures, with many individuals being held on remand while awaiting trial. Securing pre-trial release often requires a well-developed and monitored plans. For many people, particularly those experiencing homelessness, poverty, or limited social supports, identifying a suitable and vetted surety can be a significant barrier to release.

This is where bail programs play a pivotal role. By providing community-based supervision, accountability, and professional support, bail programs help address barriers to release while supporting individuals in complying with court-ordered conditions and successfully remaining in the community.

The Community Services team was proud to participate in the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) Be Well Event, which brought together community agencies and service providers to connect with students and promote wellness. The event provided an opportunity for students to learn about available programs, services, and resources, while engaging directly with representatives from participating organizations.

Our team was grateful for the opportunity to connect with so many students, share information about our programs, and build awareness of the supports available within the community. We look forward to continuing these meaningful connections and helping students access the resources they need to thrive.

World Mental Health Day highlights the importance of mental health and access to care. Many individuals involved in the justice system experience mental health challenges and face barriers to treatment. Lack of access to mental health services can increase the risk of reoffending.

JHSPHD supports programs that connect individuals with mental health resources and community supports. Research shows that addressing mental health needs alongside housing and employment supports significantly reduces recidivism.

Recently, some of our staff team had the opportunity to participate in Part Three of the Felt Sense & the Four Seasons of Change training. As part of the training, we engaged in a role play intended to help us better understand what Indigenous people endured.

Children taken from their homes. Culture and language stripped away. Maltreatment and hidden abuse. Generations changed forever.

While no training can truly replicate these experiences, it gave us an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the profound impact on individuals, families and communities, the lasting effects of intergenerational trauma, and why the work of reconciliation matters.

Truth and Reconciliation Day is a reminder that this history is not distant. It is a history that continues to shape families, communities and experiences today.

Today, we remember the children who never came home, the survivors who carried these experiences with them, and the families and communities who continue to live with the impacts.

Reconciliation requires more than remembering. It requires listening, learning, acknowledging the truth, and taking responsibility for the work that remains.

Every child deserves to be safe, loved, and connected to their family, culture, language and community.

Today, we remember. We listen. And we commit to continuing the work.

This day honours survivors of residential schools and recognizes the ongoing impacts of colonialism on Indigenous communities. Indigenous people remain overrepresented in Canada’s justice system due to systemic inequities and the effects of intergenerational trauma caused by colonialism.

JHSPHD supports reconciliation through culturally responsive programming and restorative justice approaches. Addressing barriers to housing, education, and employment is critical to improving outcomes among Indigenous individuals.

Farther north and west, the schools reached into small communities, extracting children into systems not of their making. St. Bernard’s at Grouard, St. John’s near Wabasca, and St. Martin’s in Desmarais — each one Catholic-run — sought to shape children into images of a foreign world.

St. Paul’s, like its namesake in other provinces, carried the Catholic mission forward, while Youville stood in St. Albert as part of the earliest wave of these institutions. Each school was a strand in the net that tried to capture the future of Indigenous Nations.

But threads slipped through. Elders say the children held onto songs in secret, held onto teachings of the land even when forced indoors, held onto each other. These quiet acts of defiance are the reason languages live today, why Nations continue to rise, and why truth cannot be buried.

We will not forget.
We will not be silent.
We will carry the truth forward.

At John Howard Society (Peel-Halton-Dufferin), we are proud to support Grandmother’s Voice and their work in honouring Indigenous children, uplifting Survivors, and carrying forward truth and reconciliation. We join Grandmother's Voice and ROCK Reach Out Centre for Kids for their Walk to Remember the Children as we all continue to educate ourselves on truth of this day and deeper meaning of reconciliation.
