John Howard Society of Peel-Halton-Dufferin JHSPHD creates safer communities by supporting those involved with the ON criminal justice system. Effective. Just. Humane.

The John Howard Society of Peel-Halton-Dufferin is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating safer communities by supporting people who have been involved with the criminal justice system. We help our community by providing evidence-based programs and services that hold the individual accountable for their actions while looking beyond the criminal behaviour to address the root causes of crime through education programs and housing support.

JHSPHD strongly believes in supporting the wellbeing of not only those who use our services, but also the dedicated professionals who provide them. Today, John joined staff from programs across the organization for a nature walk and team lunch. Through this experience, he gained insight into the importance of connection, movement, and peer support in promoting wellness, building resilience, and helping to prevent burnout.

JHSPHD supports youth programs focused on prevention, intervention, and education. Evidence shows early intervention reduces recidivism.

Prisoner Justice Day is a solidarity movement that takes place annually on August 10 in support of prisoners’ rights and to remember all the people who have died of unnatural deaths while incarcerated.

Each year, our agency comes together to deepen our understanding of this important day through education, meaningful dialogue, and a moment of silence to honour those who have lost their lives while in custody.

Harm to self occurs at significantly higher rates in correctional institutions than in the general population. The risk is even greater in women’s institutions, where gender-responsive supports, treatment, and programming are often insufficient. These realities highlight the importance of continued advocacy for mental health care, dignity, and well-being in custody.

A 173% increase in deaths in Ontario custodial settings between 2010 and 2021 serves as a stark reminder of why Prisoners’ Justice Day remains relevant today. It is a day to remember those who have died in custody and to reflect on the importance of accountability, dignity, and care within correctional systems.
