John Howard Society of Peel-Halton-Dufferin JHSPHD creates safer communities by supporting those involved with the ON criminal justice system. Effective. Just. Humane.

The John Howard Society of Peel-Halton-Dufferin is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating safer communities by supporting people who have been involved with the criminal justice system. We help our community by providing evidence-based programs and services that hold the individual accountable for their actions while looking beyond the criminal behaviour to address the root causes of crime through education programs and housing support.

This day highlights environmental sustainability and healthy communities. Safe environments and stable housing are key social determinants of health. The lack of green spaces in urban environments leads to higher temperatures, reduced air quality, and reduced mental health. Lower-income neighbourhoods tend to have access to fewer greenspaces, leading to long term health inequities and reduced quality of life. JHSPHD supports equitable access to greenspaces and healthy, inclusive communities.

Pride Month celebrates LGBTQ2S+ communities and raises awareness about ongoing discrimination and inequality. LGBTQ2S+ individuals often face higher rates of homelessness, unemployment, and mental health challenges—key social determinants of long-term health.

JHSPHD promotes inclusive programming that supports individuals in accessing housing, employment, and healthcare services. Creating safe and supportive environments helps reduce marginalization and improve reintegration outcomes. Research shows that inclusive and affirming services play a critical role in reducing recidivism and supporting long-term stability.

National Indigenous History Month recognizes the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

It is also a time to reflect on the ongoing impacts of colonialism and systemic inequities that contribute to the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in Canada’s justice system. Addressing systemic barriers and inequity related to housing, education, employment, and health is critical to reducing recidivism and supporting long-term community wellbeing.

to a very important day for the staff at JHSPHD. We joined many other community members for the Walk to Remember the Children event with Grandmother's Voice at Bronte Creek Provincial Park.

Held on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the event offered a meaningful opportunity to listen to the wisdom of Elders, reflect, learn, and grow together. We look forward to participating again with our friends at Grandmother's Voice this September.
