The FireSmart Intermediate Zone extends from 1.5 to 10 metres around the home. This is where grass, shrubs, fencing, sheds, firewood and stored items can influence how fire could move toward the structure.

DO ONE THING: walk the zone and choose one thing to move, trim, maintain or plan.

October's crisp mornings and colourful canopies make it hard not to think about the season that comes after fall. As you start getting your home ready for winter, here's some things to keep in mind to prevent emergency calls later.

With furnaces running more frequently, make sure your heating equipment is in good working order:
• Schedule a furnace inspection by a licensed technician to remove dust and debris that can ignite.
• Replace filters to improve air quality and reduce strain on the system.
• Keep the area around your furnace clear of boxes, paint cans, and cleaning supplies.
• Check and clean vents and registers to ensure airflow isn’t blocked.

As temperatures drop, many households begin using fireplaces again — and that makes chimney maintenance essential.

A dirty or damaged chimney is one of the leading causes of preventable home fires. Creosote, a highly flammable residue, builds up inside chimneys over time. When fireplaces are used without proper cleaning, that buildup can ignite and cause a fast moving chimney fire:
• Schedule an annual chimney sweep by a certified professional before your first fire of the season.
• Inspect your chimney cap to ensure it’s secure and free of debris.
• Check for cracks in masonry or metal liners.
• Burn only dry, seasoned wood to reduce creosote buildup – never ever burn holiday wrapping paper!
• Keep a screen or glass barrier in front of your fireplace to prevent sparks.
A clean chimney not only reduces fire risk — it improves heating efficiency and keeps smoke out of your home.

Today marks marks Orange Shirt Day – Every Child Matters, a grassroots movement co-founded by Phyllis Webstad and led by Indigenous voices. It centers truth-telling, community action, and Survivor-led remembrance. September 30th also marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It is a day of great importance, and of deep reflection. It offers an opportunity to recognize the devastating results of residential schools and to honour Survivors, their families, and their communities.

Today is a day of remembrance and resilience, and a call to reflect on how we can impact reconciliation, both as individuals and through our work. FireSmart Canada honours the truths of Survivors, their families, and the children who never returned home. 🧡

Proposed Bragg Creek Community Fireguard | Open House

Rocky View County (RVC), in collaboration with the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta and Alberta Forestry and Parks, is currently exploring a proposed community fireguard west of Bragg Creek.

The proposed fireguard would be located on provincial Crown land between Township Road 232 and Highway 66 and would include areas within and around the West Bragg Creek trail network.

The project is currently in the planning stage. No funding has been approved and no decision has been made to proceed with construction.

RVC is inviting residents, landowners, recreational users & community organizations to learn more, ask questions and share local considerations as planning continues.

A community fireguard is an area where trees, vegetation and other wildfire fuels are removed or reduced to help slow the spread and intensity of wildfire and provide strategic areas for wildfire response.

The proposed alignment would intersect the West Bragg Creek trail network in a number of locations, and preliminary plans include temporary access routes and different vegetation treatments depending on terrain, environmental conditions and wildfire mitigation requirements. The alignment, treatment areas and access routes remain preliminary and may change as planning continues.

We encourage our trail community to attend the open house to learn more about the proposal directly from the project team and provide feedback.
