Farmworkers Union of Alberta

Farmworkers Union of Alberta FUA supports the efforts to enact Bill 6, to provide WCB claim assistance and other fundamental supports to agricultural workers on industrial farms.

The couple thought about doing something, but did not know where to start. In 1999, after the brutal slaying of a fellow farmworker by his employer, they decided to start to advocates for change. FUA lobbied at a small grass roots level, but in 2004 we escalated our efforts as a result of the extremely poor condition experienced by our members working Alberta's potato industry. Members were working

with paid child labourers as young as eight years old. These children were working in hazardous conditions without even basic safety equipment. Their employers were working for large companies. These were not children helping on the family farm. Musekamp and Dunlop decided to start to work with law makers and other organizations to create change and equality for agricultural workers in Alberta. It is the last remaining province not to have protection for these workers.
