BGC Botwood

BGC Botwood In 1984, a group of concerned citizens gathered to discuss the lack of structured activities for the community’s children and youth. The request was granted.

The meeting resulted in the formation of a steering committee which later submitted a proposal to the Boys and Girls Club of Newfoundland and Labrador. The proposal requested the privilege to house a local Club in the community of Botwood yet, serving the children and youth from neighbouring communities. In April of 1986, the Botwood Boys and Girls Club, later named the Boys and Girls Club of Botw

ood (often referred to as the Club) opened its doors offering a variety of services including, but not limited to, educational programs, physical recreation and cultural activities. From the time it opened its doors, the Club became a treasured resource for many community members. Children and youth have relied on the Club for homework support, employment opportunities, leadership development and so much more. As a community partner, the Club has collaborated on a variety of initiatives with numerous community organizations. The annual food drive, “Take Back the Night” walk, and Fire Prevention Days are just a few of the projects successfully executed as a means of bringing awareness to the children, youth and community members. One of the Club’s biggest partnerships is with the Community Youth Network. This partnership began in 2000 and focuses on providing services and support along four business lines: learning, employment, community building and support services. While the Club has experienced many successes, it also had to overcome challenges. The biggest challenge to date was the fire of July 21, 2005 which destroyed the Lions Club and the space occupied for Club programs and services. In a moment, the fire engulfed the staffing and program areas leaving only memories untouched. While the physical areas were destroyed, the will of the staff and board of directors to implement the Club’s mandate remained. Allied with community support and armed with determination, the supporters set out to find the Club a new home. After much perseverance, the dream of a new home became a reality! With much excitement and enthusiasm, the Club’s doors reopened on February 1, 2008. Since its beginning, the Club continues to be an evolving organization trying to meet the needs of all its membership. Most recently in March of 2021, the Boys and Girls Club of Botwood changed its name to BGC Botwood to reflect societal changes with gender identity and to remain inclusive for all children and youth. Despite its ongoing evolution, one thing remains constant, BGC Botwood continues to remain a safe and supportive place where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life. For more information about opportunities available to children and youth at BGC Botwood, call 709 257 3191 or drop by the Club on three Military Road.

Limiting screen time is not enough.

Violent online groups are targeting youth on social, gaming and streaming applications.

The time from first contact to blackmail to self-harm can happen in just a few hours.

Warning signs your youth is being targeted:
• Spending more unsupervised time online
• Family pet or animals are being harmed or go missing
• Quieter and more withdrawn than usual
• Receiving anonymous gifts (virtual or physical)
• Covering their skin with long sleeves or bandages
• And more!

🌲YOUNG WOMEN IN CENTRAL
NEWFOUNDLAND🌲

Join us for a weekend of unplugging, reconnecting, and some darn good food!

ENWA is offering this 2 day retreat for our young women aged 14-18 in the central region.

This retreat will include cultural teachings and ceremony with trusted community Elders and Knowledge Keepers, as well as engaging and interactive workshops on topics such as: resiliency in the digital age, nervous system regulation and stress management, self esteem and identity, AI, and lateral violence. The workshops will be predominantly youth led and youth will have an opportunity to share their own voices and knowledge as well.

Taking place at the beautiful Twin Ponds Wilderness Lodge, participants will have their accommodations and food fully covered for the duration of the retreat, and will be gifted with beautiful welcome packages, with some bang up prizes up for grabs!

If there are any young people who are interested but nervous about attending, please reach out to me (I’m Jess!) with any questions or concerns. I know these things can feel very intimidating, I’ve been there, but I’ve never regretted attending one of these gatherings, and you won’t either:)

My email is [email protected].

(If there are any parents of young people who are interested or think this would be beneficial to their child, please also feel free to reach out!)

Once you sign up, I’ll send you a google form so we can get your information. All you have to do to register is email me saying ‘I’m interested in the digital detox retreat, my name is _________’, and I’ll take it from there.

We are looking forward to an incredible weekend full of culture, knowledge, and lots of laughs!

Hope to hear from you soon, and please share with your network.

Wela’lin!

Staff received a note today that was simply too special and meaningful not to share.

These are the moments that remind us why the work we do at BGC Botwood matters so much. Knowing that our efforts, care, and time have made a difference means more than you know.

Thank you for the kind words and for reminding our staff just how special the connections made this summer truly are.
