Cormorant monitoring and management program in Bonnyville; Report a sighting of double-crested cormorant colonies in northeast Alberta.

The Cormorant Monitoring and Management Program was established in 2021 to determine the number of double-crested cormorants in the Bonnyville area and assess possible impacts of cormorant activity on nearby lake fisheries.

You can help by sending us the location and size of cormorant colonies and foraging (feeding) groups when you observe them within the Bonnyville monitoring and management area.

MLWS and the Alberta Lake Management Society (ALMS) are seeking a dedicated volunteer to participate in ALMS' LakeWatch program this coming summer!
LakeWatch is a participatory lake monitoring program where ALMS staff work with volunteers to collect water quality information from lakes across the province. For Moose Lake to be sampled through the LakeWatch program in 2023, a volunteer must be able to provide a boat and sample with an ALMS technician four times through the summer, once monthly, from June to September.
Sampling ideally would occur in the morning or afternoons during weekdays. If you're interested in volunteering, email Bradley at [email protected]

BE AWARE!! There have been several reported fatalities of family pets due to contact with blue-green algae / cyanobacteria in Moose Lake. If you see a bloom, do not enter into the water and prevent your pets from coming into contact with the bloom.

Cyanobacteria produce several different forms of toxins, some of which are lethal within minutes to others that can bioaccumulate and cause long term damage to vital organs such as kidneys and liver. Contact can also cause severe dermatitis (skin reactions).

Despite the name, blue-green algae can be turquoise, green, brown, red, white or mixes of these colours. Blue-green algae blooms can look like fine grass clippings in the water, spilled paint or pea soup. Sometimes they look like a thick scum on the surface. They often smell musty or grassy when healthy and like ammonia when decomposing.

For more information on what to do if you come in contact with blue-green algae go to: https://myhealth.alberta.ca/alberta/pages/blue-green-algae.aspx
