Today is International Day of Play, and this year’s theme is “Protect play, protect childhood”. In honour of this important day, CANFRO would like to acknowledge the great work done by one of our partner agencies, Centro de Esperanza Infantil. CEI supports children from low-income families in Oaxaca state, by providing them with education, meals and opportunities to play, learn and grow. You can support CEI by donating to CANFRO. This is Elian. She lives with her family in Santa Cruz Xoxocotlan and was recently accepted into a local university medical program. Elian is a beneficiary of CANFRO’s School Sponsorship Project with partner Centro de Esperanza Infantil A.C.

This project supports families with limited incomes to keep their children attending school. Funds assist with the many “hidden” costs that represent impossible barriers to most families. Without help, children who are both capable and willing continue to be ignored, live marginal lives and often remain in poverty, a preventable waste of potential.

Jo-Anne, a CANFRO Board Member and sponsor, was thrilled to meet with Elian and her family to celebrate this momentous occasion. With Elian’s hard work and determination, and CANFRO’s support, we are excited to see her realize her dreams! Buen suerte Elian!

Susan Weinert is a volunteer and fundraiser extraordinaire. She has been involved in various charitable activities including many years of support for children. Last year Susan hosted a very successful “Soup Days” in support of CANFRO’s Food Project; building community as well as raising money for good causes. The enthusiasm and response was so positive that Susan recently repeated the event and raised another $660 for the Food Project.
An invitation to join Susan for a “Soup Day” of crockpots of different types of soup was publicized in her condo building’s elevators, bulletin boards and Facebook groups. She solicited & received bread donations from a local bakery. As for the fundraising part: Susan invited neighbours to donate whatever amount they felt like giving.
It’s not hard to imagine that this idea could be replicated, modified as needed, in communities and home kitchens anywhere in Canada. Start rounding up those crockpots.

CANFRO is pleased to announce that Michael Shea of Toronto now serves as CANFRO's new Chair of Communications. With a proven track record of involvement with various non-profit organizations, Michael joined the CANFRO Board in October 2025 and has already dedicated numerous hours to enhancing the organization's communication systems.
Oaxaca and Mexico hold a special significance for Michael, who was inspired by the region's culture, spirit, and resilience during his initial visit in 1989. Having strengthened his connections with Oaxaca through subsequent visits, Michael now gives back as a CANFRO Board Member.

The Oaxaca Learning Centre (Centro de Aprendizaje de Oaxaca) was founded in 2005 by Gary Titus, a retired community organizer from San Francisco, and Jaasiel Quero, a public school teacher in Oaxaca. They developed a unique and highly effective methodology combining academic tutoring, active coaching and mentoring that has modified and changed over time based on experience. CANFRO partners with TOLC in two projects: The Tutor Project and The Advanced Education Project

CANFRO attended a recent Libros para Pueblos annual donor event where they shared information and statistics about their library projects. The 14th century phrase “the proof of the pudding is in the eating” refers to the true value of something being judged by putting it to the test. It speaks to the quality and efficacy of something. Good organizations do good work. Great organizations like CANFRO’s partner agency Libros para Pueblos track and share the outcomes of their work so that our donors know the results of their contributions.
