A University of Toronto study reveals that over half of drivers making right turns at busy intersections fail to properly scan for pedestrians or cyclists, especially in downtown areas. Using eye-tracking equipment, the study found that 11 out of 19 drivers didn’t check areas where pedestrians or cyclists would be located, with most failures tied to overlooking cyclists. The study also highlighted the challenges of navigating intersections with obstructed views and inconsistent bike lanes. Researchers suggest improving road infrastructure and emphasizing over-the-shoulder checks to enhance safety for vulnerable road users.
