These are Louise’s thoughts on this moving piece.

When I was recording my Heroes and Angels album in 2002 I was inspired to create a piece of music that honoured my Irish ancestry. I wanted to find a way to tell the tragic story of thousands of individuals who left Ireland during the Great Famine from 1832 to 1847. They were in search of a better life here in Canada.
Many didn’t survive their voyage in the lumber ships but tens of thousands were sent to the quarantine station on Grosse Isle, the main immigration gateway to Canada. Their story can’t possibly be told in a few words but I did my best to tell their stories in my recording of “Grosse Isle”.

We are delighted to be singing Canada Sea to Sea by Louise Ford, an Alto from our choir, at our concert on April 25. Here are some of Louises thoughts on this piece.

Early last spring I lay wide awake at 2:30 a.m, reflecting on Canada and our neighbours to the south. The suggestion that we should become the 51st state was outrageous and unacceptable. I woke up to put my thoughts on paper. Instead of writing in anger I chose to write from love - for a proud, strong Canada built on respect, understanding and diversity.
Within twenty minutes powerful lyrics emerged and a melody followed within a few days. Canada Sea to Sea was co-produced by Rick Hodgson and myself at StarLink Sound Studios in Belleville and it was released on June 30 last year, just in time for Canada Day.
I’m thrilled that Canada Sea to Sea will be performed by the Belleville Choral Society this spring. I truly hope that choirs across our nation will choose to share this message of peace and understanding for today and for our future generations.
