There’s a change in the air and the rivers know it.
Cooler mornings, changing leaves, and fish moving into our rivers make this one of the most anticipated times of the year for salmon anglers in Nova Scotia.

And when the light is low a Black & Blue Marabou can be hard to beat…

The Black & Blue Marabou is a NSSA Flybox Favourite. It’s simple, bold, and built for movement. We suggest tying your marabou in at the tip and wrapping forward several turns freeing any trapped fibres as you go. Get creative and add a few other colours to your box too!

As always know the regulations for the river you’re fishing, and keep conservation and the centre of every cast.

There’s something special about Brook Trout in September.

As the season winds down and the water cools, brookies take on their brilliant fall colours… deep oranges, reds and brilliant white tipped fins. They’re also often eager to take a wide variety of well-presented flies, making these final weeks some of the most rewarding fishing of the year. (Bonus… there are no black flies!!)

There’s still time to enjoy Nova Scotia’s trout water before the season closes. Fish carefully, handle them gently, and take a moment to appreciate these spectacular native fish before sending them on their way.

Nova Scotia Salmon Association Field Programs staff recently had the opportunity to spend a day on the Skye River with members of Unama’ki Institute of Natural Resources Habitat Advisory Committee for a hands-on habitat restoration training session.

The committee brings together Mi’kmaw community members, anglers, and fish harvesters who share a strong connection to the rivers and aquatic resources of Unama’ki. During the training, participants gained practical experience installing digger logs and deflectors—restoration techniques used to improve habitat complexity, encourage pool development, sort spawning gravels, and support healthy river processes.

Just as importantly, the day was an opportunity for shared learning. While NSSA staff provided technical instruction and hands-on guidance, Mi’kmaw Elders and community members shared their own knowledge, experiences, and perspectives on the river and its resources.

Days like this demonstrate the value of bringing together technical restoration experience, community knowledge, and a shared commitment to healthy rivers and fish populations.

Attention Anglers

The warm water protocol for the Margaree River has been lifted. The entire river is open to angling as of 4pm on August 14th.

Please be responsible during periods of hot weather, carry a stream thermometer, restrict fishing to early mornings, use a landing net to reduce playing time and stress on the fish, use heavier leader to land fish quicker. When temperatures reach 20C go to the beach, fish the salt, or read a good book.

Forests and salmon are more connected than you might think.
A new peer-reviewed study led by Dr. Hugo Medeiros, conducted on the LaHave and St. Mary’s rivers, shows that rivers bordered by healthy forests stay cooler, creating better conditions for Atlantic salmon. As our climate changes and river temperatures increase, protecting riparian forests and cold-water refuges is becoming more important than ever.

At the Nova Scotia Salmon Association, science is an essential part of the work we do. This research helps us better understand our rivers and make informed conservation decisions.

The prestigious 2026 Dave Symonds Award was presented to Bill Haley in recognition of over six decades of tireless angling advocacy and volunteer leadership. Bill’s massive impact includes serving multiple terms as President of the Margaree Salmon Association. In his acceptance speech, Bill beautifully emphasized the collaborative strength shared between the Margaree Salmon Association, NSSA, ASF, and our local communities.

Over a dozen species at risk - from the Mainland Moose to the Atlantic Salmon - rely on groups like St. Margarets Bay Stewardship Association and Nova Scotia Salmon Association to protect and enhance wilderness areas, especially when they create important refuge and habitat along urban corridors. What an incredible evening celebrating salmon, conservation, and collaboration.

Congratulations to Saumon Québec on the outstanding film “What If We Listened to the Salmon” and thank you for bringing this inspiring film to Halifax. The powerful stories and messages shared throughout the evening reminded us all why wild Atlantic Salmon are worth fighting for and how much can be achieved when passionate people come together around a common purpose.

We were especially proud to see our own Amy Weston, and NSSA’s work featured in the documentary and joining the discussion panel, sharing her experience, insight, and dedication to salmon conservation alongside fellow advocates from across the region.

Events like this reinforce the strong connections between salmon organizations, communities, and conservation leaders. By sharing knowledge, experiences, and a collective vision for the future, we are building a stronger voice for wild Atlantic salmon.

Thank you again to Saumon Québec for creating such a meaningful film and for fostering an evening that celebrated not only salmon, but the people and partnerships working to protect them.

Together, we are stronger for salmon.
