Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee Training
A Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee is required in workplaces with 20 or more employees who work for more than four weeks in a row. A Health and Safety Representative is required in workplaces with 5 or more employees and where no Committee is required. If you have employees working at more than one location, each work location may be considered a separate workplace and you may need more than one committee or representative to effectively provide representation to your employees.
It is the employer's responsibility to establish and maintain a Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee or to make sure a Health and Safety Representative is chosen. How does the employer ensure an active and participative committee that is contributing to and promoting workplace health and safety? In this 3 ½ hour session, the Nova Scotia requirements for committees and representatives will be reviewed and participants will have lots of opportunities to ask questions.

We’ll highlight specific regulations and changes that have more recently been made to First Aid. Navigating Workers' Compensation for Employers
This is a very popular session with Employers and it’s finally back!
Navigating Workers’ Compensation legislation, policy and processes is complicated, frustrating and time consuming for employers. The terms used, timelines, requests for information and knowing what information you can and can’t have just adds to the complexity. For many smaller employers the costs associated with WCB assessment premiums tremendously impact the strain on resources in the company.
In this 3 1/2 hour session we’ll help you navigate the obligations under the legislation, review the rights, roles and responsibilities of the workplace parties, and look at specific policies and requirements that you will find useful to know and understand. We’ll discuss reemployment obligations and return to work as important factors in anyone’s OHS program. Participants will have many opportunities to be involved in discussion and ask questions. Session powerpoint and reference materials will provide important information to review long after the session.
This session is taught by the OEA NS team.

The regulatory challenges and complexities faced by Nova Scotia employers make the Employer Advisor Nova Scotia Society / Office of the Employer Advisor (OEA) a necessity. With an ever-changing regulatory and business environment– the timing for such a program couldn't be better.
Nova Scotia is one of the last provinces to implement an OEA; having existed in various forms throughout Canada since the early 1980s. After 15 years of lobbying by employer groups, the Office of the Employer Advisor became a reality to employers, as a pilot program, in May 2008. In 2011, the OEA received a commitment from the OHS Division and the Worker’s Compensation Board to make the program permanent.
Operating through a funding agreement with WCB, the OEA is administratively separate from government and is a registered not for profit with Nova Scotia Registry of Joint Stock Companies.
The Employer Advisor Nova Scotia Society is here to assist Nova Scotia employers and employer associations. We provide Nova Scotia employers advocacy for key issues.
