Big news for Ontario's rural Main Streets! 🎊

OBIAA has been awarded $79,583 from the Ontario Ministry of Rural Affairs to launch Main Street Advantage: Building Rural Competitiveness - a new initiative built by and for the BIAs that keep our rural communities thriving.

This project was inspired by the incredible work happening on Main Streets across Ontario every day. We can't wait to get started. 🙌

Thank you to the Honourable Lisa Thompson, Minister of Rural Affairs, for this investment in rural Ontario.

🧡 National Indigenous Peoples Day 🧡

Today, on June 21, we recognize and celebrate the rich cultures, histories, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Ontario and throughout Canada.

Main Streets and downtowns exist on Indigenous lands and continue to be places of gathering, storytelling, culture, entrepreneurship, and community connection. Across Ontario, Indigenous artists, creators, entrepreneurs, and community leaders contribute to vibrant and thriving local economies while sharing knowledge, culture, and traditions that strengthen our communities.

National Indigenous Peoples Day is an opportunity to reflect, learn, and listen — and to continue building respectful relationships grounded in reconciliation and understanding.

We encourage communities to support Indigenous-owned businesses, attend local events and celebrations, and take time to learn about the Indigenous Peoples and territories where they live and work.

💙 Celebrating Father’s Day on Ontario’s Main Streets

Today, we recognize the fathers, father figures, caregivers, and local business owners who help keep our communities strong.

From family-run shops and restaurants to service providers and entrepreneurs, fathers play an important role in shaping the welcoming, vibrant Main Streets that connect our communities.

This Father’s Day, consider shopping local, grabbing a coffee, enjoying a meal, or finding the perfect gift right on your Main Street. ☕🛍️

Supporting local businesses helps support the people who make our communities feel like home. 💙

Happy Father’s Day from OBIAA!

☀️ Summer on Main Street Starts Here

Across Ontario, BIAs are bringing communities together with a season full of energy, creativity, and connection.

From vibrant night markets to live music, sidewalk sales, food festivals, and patio activations, summer events transform Main Streets into places where people gather, explore, and support local.

These moments do more than create great experiences — they:
✨ Drive foot traffic to local businesses
✨ Support small business growth
✨ Strengthen community connections
✨ Showcase the unique identity of each main street

Behind every event is a BIA working to create welcoming, dynamic spaces that keep our downtowns thriving all season long.

🌻 This summer, explore a local BIA, attend an event, and experience the impact firsthand.

Ensuring Everyone Has a Place to Call Home

Every person deserves a safe place to call home. Homelessness isn't just a downtown issue - it's a human one, with ripple effects that touch communities, families, and Main Streets across Ontario. That's why OBIAA proudly supports the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Big City Mayors' Caucus Vibrant Downtowns initiative and its call for $3.5B annually in Housing First solutions, deeply affordable housing, and the coordinated mental health and addictions supports that help people find and keep stable housing. When people are housed and supported, whole communities are stronger. 🏘️

"Indwell has become an important part of the fabric of Old East Village. Their supportive housing model goes far beyond simply providing a roof over someone's head. By combining affordable housing with on-site supports, wellness programs, and community-building opportunities, they help people achieve greater stability, independence, and a sense of belonging. Their work demonstrates that when housing and support services are integrated, lives can be transformed and communities become stronger." - Kevin Morrison, Executive Director, Old East Village BIA
