Week 17 in the Barrie Catch the Ace Lottery and Carmen Pyman from Midland, Ontario is our Weekly (March 6th) Winner taking home $4,414 but missing out on another $85,405 when her selection of Envelope 27 revealed the 4 of Spades and not the Ace of Spades.

We have just been informed that Allister "Mac" MacDonald a long time member of the RCAF Barrie 441 Wing Veterans Club passed away yesterday March 5 at Collingwood. Mac was well known in many of the Simcoe County Veteran clubs and a WWII Veteran. We are sorry to learn of his passing. Here are some details of his time in service during WWII.

Thanks to Bill Sergeant, Chair of the RCAFA Huronia Wing for the photo of Mac in WWII uniform.

Branch Historian Steve Glover recently spoke with a Barrie Legion member, Greg Barker who has a lot of knowledge about Canada's Military History.

Greg recently shared his knowledge about Pilot Officer A.B. Thompson from Penetanguishene and while sharing this information, Greg also mentioned the name of Phil Marchildon.

Phil was also born in Penetanguishene and served as a RCAF Pilot Officer during WWII. But before he served, he played in the American Major League with the Philadelphia Athletics as one of their best pitchers. He too became a Prisoner of War after surviving his plane being shot down over the Baltic Sea and being in the icy cold water for over 4 hours. He like A.B. Thompson was sent to Stalag Luft 3 and survived the January forced Death March across Germany. On his return to freedom, he was asked to rejoin the Philadelphia Athletics and played Major League ball until 1950. But his 9 months of being a POW had taken it's toll on this athlete and he returned to work in Toronto and play intermediate and senior ball and being elected to the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame and later the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.

It is our hope that there is sufficient interest in having this Simcoe County WWII Veteran recognized with a Flag Banner for our Commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of WWII. If you would like to make a donation for him, please drop by the Barrie Legion and speak with the Bar Steward during our opening hours

In his book, “Behind The Glory”, Canadian Historian, Ted Barris’ tells the unique story of Canada’s largest World War Two expenditure – $1.75 billion in a Commonwealth-wide training scheme, based in Canada that supplied the Allied air war with nearly a quarter of a million qualified airmen.

Within its five-year life-span, the BCATP supplied a continuous flow of battle-ready pilots, navigators, wireless radio operators, air gunners, flight engineers, riggers and fitters or more commonly known as ground crew, principally for the RCAF and RAF as well as the USAAF.

Plan to be with us at the Barrie Legion on Tuesday evening April 29 as the Barrie Legion commemorates the 80th Anniversary of the end of WWII in Europe.

In Winston Churchill’s words, the BCATP proved “the decisive factor” in winning the Second World War.

Another WWII Veteran from Simcoe County who gained early notoriety in the War was RAF Pilot Alfred "A.B" Thompson from Penetanguishene.

When he was just 17, he enlisted with the Simcoe Foresters in 1933 at the age of 17 and in December of 1934 had become an Officer (2nd Lieutenant) with this Militia unit.

In 1936, the Simcoe Foresters aware of the financial matters brought on by the Depression merged with the Grey County Militia to become the Grey and Simcoe Foresters.

But 21 year old A.B. Thompson wanted to be a pilot and the British Government very much concerned about the threat that Germany under Adolf Hi**er might become were encouraging young men to join their forces and learn to fly. In short order A.B. Thompson was flying with the RAF. And when Britain declared War with Germany on September 3, Pilot Officer Thompson was flying over Germany dropping leaflets to encourage the German people to resist. And then disaster struck on September 9 and this young Canadian became the first Canadian Prisoner of War in WWII.

Many of those who are members of Barrie area Veterans Clubs remember that this young Canadian was ready to get into the military to serve Canada and the motherland. In 1944, Pilot Officer Thompson was one of 76 men who escaped from Stalag Luft III - known as The Great Escape. He was able to elude the Germans who were searching for him for a month before he was found and returned to be a POW.

The Veterans Club of Barrie are hoping that their donation will assist in getting a Flag Banner and Pole for Alfred B. Thompson who became a lawyer and eventually a Queens Counsel in 1967 serving the Crown Attorney's Barrie offices.

If you would like to assist with a donation, please come into the Barrie Legion and speak with one of the Bar Stewards. All part of the Barrie Legion Commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of VE-Day (May 8, 1945)

Branch Historian Steve Glover is leading the Barrie Legion Executive on discovering the stories of so many amazing Simcoe County men and women who served our nation during WWII. Many thousands served and there is a story that can be told for each one.

One of the best stories that can be told is about William (Bill) Moir who was a long time Barrie Legion Veteran Member who has largely been forgotten about.

But thanks to his family who are proud of their Dad and their Grandfather, we can now tell you about this amazing man who first signed on with the 48th Highlanders and then the PLDG 4th Reconnaissance Regiment during WWII!

We are still looking to cover the dull costs for a Flag Banner and Flag Pole for Bill who was twice voted as Barrie Legionnaire of the Year for his support of all things Legion and of course, the Poppy Campaign. If you are interested in contributing to a Flag Banner in his honour, please drop by the Barrie Legion and speak with one of our Bar Stewards.
