Did you know there are more than 70 million deaf people worldwide, using more than 300 different sign languages?

International Day of Sign Languages is a special opportunity for us to shine a light on the vital importance and diversity of sign languages around the world, and the vibrant communities brought together around them.

Let's all do our part to build up our communities in Simcoe Muskoka to ensure accessible communication, inclusion, equitable care, and meaningful connections are available to everyone.

It’s a month dedicated to celebrating Deaf culture, identity, and community. It’s a time to amplify the voices of Deaf and hard of hearing people and incorporate practices in our everyday lives that make inclusion and accessibility the norm.

This year's theme, "No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights" is a reminder to us all that access to language and information is not a privilege, it is a right. We recognize that full access to language is foundational to relationships, education, employment, health care, and all aspects of daily life.

This week we hope you will join us in celebration of Deaf identity, culture, and rights.
