🕷️ Meet one of Canada’s largest native spiders!

This impressive Dark Fishing Spider (Dolomedes tenebrosus) was recently spotted in one of the outbuildings at a conservation area. With a leg span that can reach up to 9 centimetres across, it’s easy to see why encounters with these spiders tend to stop people in their tracks!

Despite belonging to the “fishing spider” family, Dark Fishing Spiders are more commonly found on tree trunks, under loose bark, or taking shelter in buildings near forests and wetlands. They are skilled hunters that do not rely on webs to catch prey, instead actively stalking insects and other small animals.

While their size may look intimidating, these spiders are an important part of healthy ecosystems, helping keep insect populations in balance.

What do 15 blue whales have to do with local conservation?

That's roughly the amount of soil kept out of rivers and streams each year through stewardship projects completed with farmers and landowners across the Nottawasaga watershed.

Healthy soil supports productive farms. Healthy waterways support thriving communities. Through the Healthy Waters Program, projects like streamside planting, livestock fencing, and streambank stabilization help achieve both.

Funding and technical support are available for eligible projects.

This Yellow Lady's Slipper was spotted by our Healthy Waters Program Coordinator while out in the field.

The Yellow Lady’s-slipper is one of over 60 wild orchid species native to Ontario. Blooming from late May through June, it features distinct twisted, greenish-yellow petals and a bright yellow, inflated "pouch."

This orchid prefers cool, shaded, north-facing slopes with well-draining, calcium-rich soils (like limestone), making the escarpment a great habitat for them to grow.
