🕷️ Meet one of Canada’s largest native spiders!
This impressive Dark Fishing Spider (Dolomedes tenebrosus) was recently spotted in one of the outbuildings at a conservation area. With a leg span that can reach up to 9 centimetres across, it’s easy to see why encounters with these spiders tend to stop people in their tracks!
Despite belonging to the “fishing spider” family, Dark Fishing Spiders are more commonly found on tree trunks, under loose bark, or taking shelter in buildings near forests and wetlands. They are skilled hunters that do not rely on webs to catch prey, instead actively stalking insects and other small animals.
While their size may look intimidating, these spiders are an important part of healthy ecosystems, helping keep insect populations in balance.
