Turkana - the largest county in all of Kenya, located in the northwest and covering 98,600 sq km. Over many years of famine and drought, residents have suffered through a lack of clean water.
Kakamega - the 26th largest county, located in western Kenya, covering 3034 sq km. It is the centre of our humanitarian work in Kenya.
In 2012, CES Kenya supported Dennis Were to complete secondary school at Sidikho SS. He later took part in the Internship and CESCED Leadership studies programs. With the help of a CES Leonard Wandili Memorial Scholarship; he is now in his final year of completing an MSc in Public Health, majoring in Health Promotion.
In 2023-24, while working in Turkana under the auspices of the Kenya Red Cross, Dennis led the implementation process of the Kangura borehole rehabilitation through its Emergency Response to Drought and Natural Disasters project.
It serves residents of Natukobenyo and Kangura villages through a pipeline network, and three water kiosks at Natukobenyo village. It also supplies clean and safe water to the Kangura Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre. Water from the borehole contributes to greenhouse farming in the area.
Dennis reports that pipes and pumps are connected to a solar powered system, yielding a flow of 6.34m3/hr and serving approximately 5000-10,000 residents of the two villages.
This amazing project was made possible through the Kenya Red Cross under the International Centre for Humanitarian Affairs (ICHA) with funding from the government of Japan and UNHABITAT Kenya.
Through one CES scholarship in 2012, we see the results a dozen years later. An investment in one life has the real potential of helping thousands to overcome huge living challenges - and that’s what makes our work in Kenya so worthwhile.
