The Ontario Provincial Police Association is proud to support the 20th Anniversary Share The Road Gran Fondo, taking place on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre in Milton.
This milestone carries deep meaning for the OPP family. Twenty years ago on June 6, 2006, OPP Sgt. Greg Stobbart, a respected and well‑known member of the OPP, was tragically killed by a driver, later convicted of Careless Driving, while on an off‑duty training ride in Milton.
In the aftermath of Greg’s death, his wife, Eleanor McMahon, transformed unimaginable loss into action — launching the first memorial ride in 2006 and ultimately founding the Share the Road Cycling Coalition.
Commissioner Carrique and the OPP Cycling Team will join cyclists from across Ontario for this special anniversary event.
Two decades later, the Gran Fondo continues Greg’s legacy on the same roads where he trained, departing just south of where he lost his life. The ride honours Greg’s memory while supporting Share the Road’s work to build safer roads and stronger communities through advocacy, education, infrastructure improvements, and legislative change.
Over the past twenty years, that work has contributed to major road‑safety achievements, including Greg’s Law, Ontario’s one‑metre safe passing law, stronger protections for vulnerable road users, and significant investments in cycling infrastructure across the province.
This year, funds raised will also support the launch of Bikeability Ontario, a new cycling‑skills education program designed to give children the confidence, skills, and safety knowledge they need to ride safely and develop healthy habits for life.
Share the Road is launching Bikeability Ontario in three communities in Ontario to start - and has plans to scale the program up province-wide. The OPP is supporting this work.
Participants can choose from 40 km, 80 km, or 110 km routes through Halton Region, with fully supported riding, rest stops, on‑road assistance, and a post‑ride meal and refreshments.
For OPP members, the 20th anniversary is an opportunity to remember one of our own — and to support the lasting legacy that has grown from his memory.
Whether you ride, donate, or help spread the word, we invite you to support this important milestone. Share the Road is a charity - so your registration generates a tax receipt.
We are honoured to stand with the Share the Road Cycling Coalition as it marks 20 years of riding in Greg’s memory and continues its work toward safer roads for everyone.
