Last week, we attended and presented at the Children, Youth and Family Services Coalition of Simcoe County (CYFCSC) Fall Forum. It was a thoughtful, energizing day with service providers, educators, and community partners who care deeply about the wellbeing of children, youth, and families in our region.

One idea from the event has stayed with us: the need to shift from talking about “equity-seeking” communities to talking about “equity-owed” or “equity-deserving” communities.

Language shapes how we understand responsibility.

“Equity-seeking” suggests that communities are asking for something they don’t yet have, or that they must work to earn fairness. But when we step back, we see the truth more clearly: people are not seeking equity because they lack something internally. They are seeking equity because systems have withheld it.

That means equity is owed—because historical and ongoing harms created the inequities in the first place.

And equity is deserved—because safety, dignity, and belonging are human rights.

This shift in language invites us to think differently about our role as service providers, leaders, educators, and community members. It reminds us that equity is not an act of generosity. It is a commitment to justice, accountability, and repair.

We’re grateful to the CYFCSC and everyone who gathered for creating a space where these conversations can happen with honesty and care. And we’re proud of the meaningful dialogue and connection that came through our presentation.

If you’d like to learn more about how these shifts in thinking can support stronger, more inclusive services, we’re always happy to connect and keep the conversation going.

🌈 Why 2S-LGBTQIA+ Inclusion Matters at Work

Inclusion isn’t just a nice idea—it’s what makes workplaces safe, respectful, and empowering. For many Two-Spirit, le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender, q***r, intersex, asexual, and other diverse-identity (2S-LGBTQIA+) folks, work can still mean facing exclusion, invisibility, or bias. That takes a toll.

✅ When people are respected for who they are, they thrive.
✅ When workplaces adopt inclusive practices, everyone benefits—better teamwork, more innovation, stronger trust.
✅ When leaders step up with allyship, culture shifts for the better.

This isn’t just about policies—it’s about people. Every action, from learning someone’s pronouns to updating policies and challenging bias, helps build a workplace where everyone feels safe and supported.

✨ Inclusion benefits us all. Let’s keep building spaces where everyone can bring their full, authentic selves to work.

Think you know what equity-seeking communities are?
Let’s put it to the test with a quick quiz — you might be surprised by the answer!

Equity isn’t about asking for “extra.” It’s about fairness, belonging, and making sure everyone has the same chance to thrive.

When we understand this, we can create safer, more welcoming spaces for everyone — including 2S-LGBTQIA+ people.

💡 That’s why inclusion training is such an important step for workplaces, schools, and communities.
Together, we can build spaces where everyone belongs.
