EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT STAFF- PLEASE READ!

ALL INJURIES & VIOLENT INCIDENTS NEED TO BE REPORTED! I have personally supported staff with what they deemed minor scratches turn into blood infection and impetigo, bruises that have become blood clots.

There is no such thing as minor!

I received an email from an Educational Assistant who had been told that owing to policy, not to report minor injuries.

The resultant data makes it seem as if violence in their schools has declined. Those results are used politically.

Meanwhile, there are workers whose minor injuries lead to greater consequences.

Bumps in the head lead to concussions.

Cuts and scrapes lead to infections.

Bruised and strained muscles lead to orthopedic injuries.

Without the paper trail, there is no evidence that these occured while at work. Therefore there is no compensation.

This is bad policy set to serve the administration/government.

I can only suggest education workers continue to submit reports for any and all injuries with a copy to the union.

If they are rejected by administration, then I suggest they be maintained by the union. If by chance the union does not accept these reports, then I would suggest they still be written and saved by yourself. Any injury report ever sent should always be saved by yourself.

Your reports, paper trail (emails) are your evidence of injury and will be necessary in the event time off work is required.

Those reports, no matter how minor can also be used to show patterns and escalations of behaviors leading to injury and dangerousness.

We want you well. However, if injured we want you bale to access necessary supports and resources. We also want to be able to demonstrate student issues and needs so they too access appropriate supports.

I can only suggest you report and/or file for yourself each and every injury. Without that report it is as if it didn't happen. Your word will not be sufficient.

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour the survivors of residential schools, their families, and the children who never came home.
