The Women & Children’s Shelter of Barrie, in partnership with Georgian College, invites students, staff, and community members to attend a vigil on December 4, in recognition of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
The vigil will take place in Georgian College’s C Building from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by an additional hour of resource tables and community engagement from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. A highlighted campus map has been provided to assist attendees with locating the event site.
This annual day of remembrance marks the anniversary of the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre, in which 14 women were murdered in an act of gender-based violence. The vigil offers space for reflection, solidarity, and renewed commitment to preventing violence against women and gender-diverse individuals within our communities. This year, the vigil will also honour the 43 women in Ontario who lost their lives to femicide over the past year, paying tribute to their memory and acknowledging the ongoing and urgent need for action. The City of Barrie declared Gender Based Violence an epidemic in 2023.
