Construction of the Lakhouse at the west end of the trail. Hope that the quiet country ambiance of the rest of the trail can be maintained as Barrie grows.

This property is located between the North Shore Trail and the water. In October the owner requested an easement to allow vehicular access to the lot which is currently zoned open space. There was concern at the time that this would lead to the construction of residential homes along the eastern end of the trail. The easement has not been granted.
The property is currently on the market.
It was suggested in October that the best solution would be for the City to purchase the waterfront lot as it was zoned open space.

This post is about a development at the far western end of the North Shore Trail.
Lakhouse project digs in at old Lakeview Dairy site
Mixed-use building to include 178 condominium units, rooftop garden, and more than 1,700 square metres of ground-floor commercial
Shiny silver metal shovels chipping frozen ground this week marked the beginning of a significant downtown Barrie development.

Lakhouse Lakeside Residence had the official ground-breaking for its residential condominium project at 185-265 Dunlop St. W., the former Lakeview Dairy site.

“Our downtown is growing today. This is a significant day,” Mayor Jeff Lehman said. “It (the property) has been vacant for a long time.”

“As many of you know we have been looking for this property since 2006,” said Tom Alatalo of developer Northern Lights Enterprises. “Who could have imagined this will take 14 years.”

The 10-storey boutique, Scandinavian-inspired condominium project will sit alongside Barrie’s North Shore Trail and offer its residents unobstructed views of Kempenfelt Bay.

Aalto Developments registered its site plan for the project almost a year ago.

It’s to be a mixed-use building with 178 condominium units. There will be 248 total parking spaces, 129 underground, and more than 1,700 square metres of ground-floor commercial uses. Roof gardens are proposed for the second and fourth floors, along with the rooftop.

Couns. Mike McCann and Gary Harvey joined Lehman at Wednesday’s ground-breaking.

Officials from Gillam Construction, ISM Architects, development principals and the Finnish Consulate were invited to participate in the chilly event.
